This week, Medewi Beach has welcomed over 200 surfers from around the island and around the world for the Medewi Board Riders Surf Challenge.

The competition is open for novice and professional surfers and is an opportunity for ocean lovers of every kind to come together to celebrate nature and the island of Bali through the medium of surfing.

The Chairman of Medewi Board Riders, Ahmad Kamal, has said that the invitational competition is a chance to highlight surfing talent from around Bali.

He shared, “Surfing has entered the Olympics. We hope this event can motivate Jembrana’s children so that they can prepare as early as possible.”

Undeniably beautiful and sitting just off what many would call the beaten track in Bali, Medewi offers a rare glimpse at what island life was like before the tourism boom.

Medewi Beach sits on the southwestern coast of Bali, around 70km from the heart of Canggu.

The surf village is incredibly relaxed and safe and offers everything tourists could wish for in a laid-back coastal retreat.

There is accommodation to suit every budget and travel style, from luxury boutique resorts to quaint backpacker hangouts, private villas, and locally run guesthouses.

Tourist planning a visit to Medewi should stretch their radar to include sister villages Pulukan and Pekutatan. One of the most impressive boutique resorts in Medewi is Puri Dajuma Beach Eco-Resort & Spa.

The hotel sits right on the beachfront, offering uninterrupted and unrivaled views of the iconic surf breaks of Medewi.

The quaint wooden cottages are built in traditional Balinese style, and guests are invited to join daily yoga classes or book in for a rejuvenating spa treatment.

While Kuta Beach may be the most famous place in Bali to learn to surf, Medewi Beach and the surrounding villages are home to a series of incredible surf schools that offer learners the chance to get to grips with life on the waves away from the busy crowds of Kuta.

Medewi Secret Surf Camp is a top-rated surf school that offers affordable accommodation, laid-back vibes, and top surf coaching in the heart of the southwest coast.

The incredible coaches at Medewi Secret Surf Camp call on their decades of experience on the waves, along with on-land training practices and video coaching, to make sure that surfers get all the guidance they need to feel safe and skilled out on the water.

Of course, with surf culture comes food culture, and Medewi is the perfect place to explore classic local food.

As tourism picks up in the area, more international cafes are opening up, too. One of the most loved cafes and hangouts in Medewi is the Holy Tree Kitchen, Coffee, and Surf Shop.

It is easily the best place for newbies to hang out, find like-minded travelers, and be introduced to a few ex-pats who have adopted Medewi as their home.

For a caffeine hit, be sure to check out Wake Wake Coffee Bar. The cafe-come-surf shop is a neat little hideaway on Panati Yeh Sumbul that serves up coffee, smoothie bowls, and some of the best cakes in the village.
