Medewi In West Bali Offers Tourists Impeccable Island Vibes

Share The Article

The west of Bali is often overlooked by tourists.

Often deemed to be too far out of the way or simply a place with not a lot going on, tourists and travelers have long been drawn in by the charms of central southern Bali.

But head along the coast, west of Canggu by about 70km, and you will discover the majestic Medewi. The area is relaxed, surfy, and as authentic a trace destination as you could ask for.

Medewi Beach, and its sister village Yeh Sumbul, are emerging as popular off-the-beaten-path destinations with surfers and backpackers.

As we know from history, where the surfer and backpackers flow, tourists will follow.

Medewi has everything you could wish for in a perfect Bali island getaway. You’ve got beaches, epic surf spots, stunning rice fields, and gorgeous local villages to explore.

It’s got to be said, Medewi is the kind of place where travelers come for a few days, directed by serendipity, only to discover that two or even three weeks have passed and they have become a new native.

Starting with surfing, it does get much better than Medewi, home to Bali’s longest left-hand wave. And it is loooong!

The surf at Medewi is perfect for skilled surfers with more than a few hours of ocean time under their belt. That said, Medewi is home to ultra-cool surf schools where newbies can find their flow on the waves.

Brown Sugar Surf Camp and Surf School are one of the most highly regarded in the Medewi area, located right on Pebble Beach.

Brown Sugar is the only surf camp in Bali to be located right on the beach. Surf lessons are first held on the beach before students head out onto the water with their local teachers.

Brown Sugar offers week-long surf and stays deals that offer great value for money and will have even the most water-shy beginners riding waves in a matter of days.

Pebble Beach is just one of the many gorgeous beaches in Medewi. Wide Sands Beach Retreat is Brown Sugar Surf Camp’s neighbor and is a quaint boutique hotel that is located right on the beachfront.

The staff is very welcoming and accommodating. Guests are treated to ocean views from the front of the hotel and vast expanses of rice terraces to the back of the property.

For the best room rates, be sure to book directly with the hotel.

Sitting just west of Pebble Beach is Pantai Yuh Sumbul. The Holy Tree Kitchen, Coffee, and Surf Shop is the best place to hang out to meet like-minded travelers and the few ex-pats who have adopted Medewi as their home.

The menu at Holy Tree is the kind of offering that has you coming back day after day to sample everything at least once.

Guests can indulge in smoothie bowls and lattes overlooking the rolling ocean. Notably, life in Medewi offers far greater value for money than many of Bali’s big tourist resorts.

Boutique beachfront hotels offer delusive rooms from IDR 500,000 a night, and at cafes like Holy Tree, generous-sized post-surf breakfasts start at just IDR 30,000.

Getting to Medewi from I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport is straightforward enough.

Whether you’re heading to the west coast as soon as you land or arriving from another of Bali’s popular tourist destinations, it is advisable to hire a driver unless you are super confident and experienced at driving in Indonesia.

The majority of the drive from central Bali to Medewi is along the Denpasar-Gilimanuk Highway, which is often populated by cargo trucks, buses, and cars which at times can feel chaotic if you’re more used to driving in other countries.

Once in Medewi, it is possible to hire a local driver to help you get about and see everything this part of Bali has to offer.

It is also just as easy to hire a moped from a local provider; just remember to obey all the rules of the road!

The only reason people read this is to make relevant comments about Bali and they will print almost anything. West Bali is a nightmare to get to. All the traffic from Jakarta to eastern indonesia goes along that road.

Correct. Jl. Gatot Subroto through Denpasar is clogged up with long distance trucks. To make it worse a huge mall was allowed to be built along Jl. Gatot Subroto leading to even worse traffic jams...

All I see at Bali sun now is a tremendous effort to pack the island with millions of tourists, like Bali needs it… the pandemic is over!!! Print other subjects. This is actually causing a huge increase in pricing on every aspect the of tourism. Talk about other infrastructure developments, like agriculture, ecology, discoveries and etc… News!! When I look at every single email from Bali sun it looks like a travel agency website… I thought that Bali sun was a news channel. I can see the this kind of posting on any travel website. Very disappointed. Maybe I should unsubscribe.
