Indonesian Tourism Minister Widiyanti Wardhana has issued an extended public statement on behalf of the Ministry of Tourism and the President of Indonesia in light of recent political unrest and public demonstrations in cities across the country, including in Bali’s Denpasar.

On the 28th August, during demonstrations in Jakarta opposing a series of recent government actions, including the decision to vastly increase senators’ allowance, a 21-year-old ride-sharing driver, Affan Kurniawan, was killed by an armoured police vehicle.

Reports widely suggest that Kurniawan was not taking part in the demonstration, and his killing by Indonesian police sparked outrage nationwide. By the evening of August 29th, demonstrations were organized across all major cities in Indonesia, including Bali’s provincial capital, Denpasar.

Demonstrations in Bali were concentrated mainly around the Bali Police Headquarters and the Bali Bali Regional People’s Representative Council (DPRD) Building. A total of 158 individuals were arrested in connection with the demonstrations, and all but three men were released without further investigation. No protests, riots, or political demonstrations took place in any tourism resort areas or areas regularly visited by international tourists.

In the days that followed, urgent statements were issued by leaders and tourism stakeholders keen to assuage concerns by tourists, travellers, investors, business travellers, and expats as dozens of embassies and foreign offices heightened travel caution levels for Indonesia.

Updates from Minister Widiyanti Wardhana come as demonstrations continue and condemnation of Indonesia’s leadership grows. Last week, President Subiatno flew to Beijing to attend the 80th Anniversary of the Victory Day of the People’s Republic of China, alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un.

Though demonstrations continue and are largely peaceful, many political leaders in Indonesia have branded the demonstrations and those involved as ‘anarchist’. Nevertheless, as pressure from the public heightens with the 17 + 8 Demands movement gaining momentum, Indonesia’s President Subianto has issued a government cabinet reshuffle as of Monday, 8th September 2025.

The Indonesian Ministry of Tourism explains, “The Ministry of Tourism of the Republic of Indonesia reassures that Indonesia remains open, welcoming, and that all major tourist destinations across the country are fully accessible. We are fully committed to providing a safe and memorable travel experience.”

Minister Wardhana shared, “In light of recent developments, President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, emphasised the importance of respecting and safeguarding the people’s true aspirations.”

“The Indonesian government remains firmly committed to upholding the rule of law, maintaining public order, and ensuring the safety of both citizens and international visitors.”

“The Ministry of Tourism confirms that Indonesia remains open and welcoming, with all major tourism destinations operating as usual. Safety and comfort are our top priorities, and we are dedicated to providing visitors with memorable experiences.”

She continues, “The Indonesian Government also confirms that Indonesia remains attractive for investment and business activities. Through ongoing structural reforms aimed at reducing economic inefficiencies, Indonesia continues to move forward with resilience, consistency, and a clear sense of direction, supported by strong fundamentals and sustained economic growth.”

The statement, published on Minister Wardhana’s account and the accounts of the Ministry of Tourism and the National Tourism Board Wonderful Indonesia, has a limited comment.

On 2nd September the office of Bali’s Governor Wayan Koster shared an response to the demonstrations “The Governor of Bali, Wayan Koster, stated that the demonstrations in Bali have ended and were successfully managed through close cooperation between the Governor and security forces, along with active participation of religious councils, Desa Adat (traditional villages), Pecalang (traditional security personnel), and all components of society.”

We should not worry about demos and riots?

Foreigners should at least be aware that internet is censored with a lot of search and tag term banned. People are tracked down this way and as such digital repression is in full force. But I guess the tourist minister rather stay silent on this unpleasant topic.
