International Comedy Star Will Make Debut Appearance In Bali

Share The Article

Bali is on a mission to attract bigger and better performers for live events on the island.

With the Department of Immigration making moves to mean artists, performers, and sports people can easily obtain visas, Bali lovers can expect to be filling their calendars with unmissable occasions over the next year or so.

On 24th January 2024, Bali will welcome internationally acclaimed British comedian Jimmy Carr to the Island of the Gods.

He will be bringing his tour Terribly Funny to the IC Center for one night and one night only, and the event is set to sell out quickly.

Terribly Funny is described as a stand-up comedy show that “contains jokes about all kinds of terrible things. Terrible things that might have affected you or people you know and love. But they’re just jokes – they are not the terrible things. Having political correctness at a comedy show is like having health and safety at a rodeo.”

Jimmy Carr is a keystone of the international comedy circuit. He started out in comedy clubs in 1997 but really made a name for himself in the early 2000s after on British TV shows like 8 Out of 10 Cats, The Big Fat Quiz of the Year and Your Face Or Mine, Carr’s cutting, deadpan and often wince-inducing comedy has been keeping audiences laughing for nearly 30 years.

His comedy specials on Netflix have been streamed millions of times, helping him build his international audience, many of which will be rushing to get tickets for his Indonesia shows.

In addition to his appearance in Bali on the 24th of January, Carr will be stopping by The Kasablanca in Jakarta on the 23rd of January.

Tickets are on sale via the Megatix website. Ticket holders are reminded that the show is strictly for adults only. Anyone unable to show proof of age will not be allowed into the IC Center auditorium. Tickets start at IDR 800,000.

While Jimmy Carr may be the biggest comedy star to appear in Bali for some time, the comedy circuit on the island is brimming with up-and-coming talent that has audiences doubled over with laughter week in and week out.

Every Friday night, Deus Cafe in Canggu hosts the Actually Funny Folk Night. The event has become something of a weekly highlight for the Canggu community and is a friendly and welcoming club night for tourists dropping by perhaps just once during their vacation.

Comedy lovers in Bali should also keep an eye out for events hosted by the Secret Comedy Club. Tickets are available now for the upcoming series that will be hosted in Canggu on October 28th, Umalas on November 3rd, and Ubud on November 10th.

Part of the fun of the events is that comedians will only be announced on the night but organizers have confirmed that headliners have made appearances on major comedy platforms, including Netflix, Comedy Central, ShowTime, and Indonesia’s KompasTV.

Both events are held in English, with plenty of Indonesian vs bule banter thrown in for good measure, and acts hail from all around the world.

In the coming months, Bali lovers can expect to see more big international acts scheduling shows in Bali and across Indonesia. In November, international legends Coldplay will be playing a sold-out show in Jakarta, an event that many leaders hope will put the country on the map as a must-visit tour location for big artists

In September, Indonesia’s Director General of Immigration, Silmy Karim, made legislative changes that make it easier for performers to legally play events in the country.

Speaking at the time of the announcement Karim explained, “We are simplifying the visa requirements for sports and music and art visas so that Indonesia becomes a destination country that is taken into account for sporting events and international music.”

He added, “Is it necessary for an athlete of Cristiano Ronaldo’s level to play exhibition football in Indonesia to require an SKCK (Police Criminal Record Clearance Certificate)?”

“Is it true that if Coldplay wants to have a concert in Jakarta, we require a minimum of five years of work experience? That’s the irrelevant requirement that we removed.”

@James Bond, Subtle British humor will fly well above their head. (P)olitics, (r)ace, (r)eligion, (s)ex, (g)ender is off the table so I'm not sure what is left to joke about.
