Hundreds of truck drivers gathered near Gilimanuk Port on Tuesday (22/2) to rally against the current traffic regulations.
A rally was conducted by hundreds of logistic drivers near the Cargo Terminal of Gilimanuk Port, Jembrana on Tuesday morning at 10:00 am, causing road closures and traffic in both Denpasar and Gilimanuk as majority of the drivers used their vehicles to block the road.
The rally was a form of protest against the traffic regulation which bans over-dimension and over-capacity vehicles from operating.
After 20 minutes of blockade, authorities managed to open the road by asking the drivers to relocate their vehicles inside the Cargo Terminal of Gilimanuk Port instead. But despite being relocated to the cargo terminal, the drivers still attempted to stop other logistic drivers from operating and asked them to join the rally.
During the rally, the drivers demanded the government to evaluate the policy that often put the drivers in a confusing situation.
The Head of the Bali Driver Alliance Movement, Sugihartoyo (Aang), confirmed that the drivers asked the government to punish the companies that hire them, instead of the drivers. He also complained that the implementation of the policy was different in other regions, causing confusion among the drivers.
“I urge the officials from the land transportation department and police department to evaluate their performance as the majority of them try to exploit and make a profit out of it through the drivers,” Aang said.
On the other hand, the authority stated that this policy has been implemented by the central government since 2009 to prevent traffic accidents that might occur from over-capacity and over-dimension vehicles.
Thankfully, the Regent of Jembrana, I Nengah Tamba, came to the location to discuss with the drivers and promised to communicate their aspirations to the central government. The truck drivers then agreed to leave the location at 2:00 pm and cancel their plan to continue the rally for 3 more days.
