Hidden Hot Springs In Bali Gives Tourists A Chance To Reconnect With Nature

Share The Article

One of the best parts of a vacation is kicking back, relaxing, and feeling all the stresses melt away.

It is a well-known fact that immersing in nature helps amplify feelings of relaxation and contentment, so what better way to relax in Bali during a vacation than to visit a hidden hot spring?

Touted as Bali’s very own version of a Japanese onsen, the Penatahan Hot Springs is a real, local secret in Bali. The natural hot springs can be found in Penatahan Village in Tabanan Regency, a quick 34km drive from the heart of Canggu.

The Hot Springs have been kept as a pretty tight local secret for decades. There are three main public hot spring pools to enjoy and eight private hot spring baths that are available for hire.

The first and smallest of the hot springs overlooks the riverbanks. Surrounded by rocks and fast-flowing water, the pool is a cool introduction to the healing waters of the hot springs.

The second pool is a little larger than the first, and temperatures typically stay between 38-40 degrees Celsius. The mineral-rich waters help the body relax and find stillness.

Some people find the temperature a little intense, and guests are reminded to stay in the hot springs no longer than they feel comfortable.

The third pool is the biggest and is a little cooler and shallower than the second, making it the perfect spot to completely ease into the relaxation.

The private pools are available for hire starting at IDR 25,000 per person; access to the public hot spring pools costs just IDR 15,000 with no time limit.

The Penatahan Hot Springs is open daily from 7 am until 7 pm. There are clean and spacious changing rooms, bathrooms, and lockers to store belongings.

The community responsible for the upkeep of the Penatahan Hot Springs has also opened several traditional warungs close to the river bank, perfect for a post-soak refuel.

Being a volcanic island, there are several hot spring destinations in Bali that are not to be missed. One of the most popular hot springs to visit on the island is the natural hot springs by Lake Batur in the Toya Devasya Resort in Kintamani.

Arguably the most picturesque hot springs in Bali, the Batur Hot Springs at Toya Devasya look at the tranquil waters of Lake Batur and over to the gentle slopes of Trunyan Hill and Mount Abang.

Batur Hot Springs are more well known than Penatahan Hot Springs, and the natural pools certainly attract more tourists on a daily basis.

Yet despite its popularity, the Batur Hot Springs remains a calm and relaxing space for all to enjoy. There is plenty of room for everyone to find their perch in the pool and ease into a state of bliss while surrounded by one of the most impressive natural landscapes in all of Indonesia.

The Batur Hot Springs at Toya Devasya Resort in Kintamani can be reached within a 45-minute drive of central Ubud.

A dip in the pools makes for the perfect addition to a day trip to the Kintamani region. With ten pools to explore, it is well worth dedicating a whole afternoon and evening to hanging out at Toya Devasya.

One of the most popular day trips from Ubud is to visit the Tegallalang Rice Terraces in the early morning to beat the crowds, followed by a late morning wander through the coffee shops of Kintamani, which can be found just another 20-minutes up the road.

Home to some of the best coffee shops and finest coffee roasters in Bali, Penelokan Main Road in the heart of Kintamani, is a paradise for coffee connoisseurs.

It is an experience not to be missed to enjoy a coffee overlooking the majestic Mount Batur and glistening Lake Batur.

Once suitably caffeine, visitors to Kintamani love taking the gentle winding drive down to the lakeside and heading straight for the natural hot springs to soak in the views and the nourishing waters of the volcanic hot springs.
