Indonesia is one of the most culturally rich and diverse nations on earth.

As the world’s biggest archipelago state and the world’s fourth largest country, it would take lifetimes to fully experience the country’s stunning cultural heritage.

Balinese Cultural Show Performer

Bali is just one of over 17,000 islands that make up modern-day Indonesia. Each region, city, town, village, and wild landscape has a unique cultural story of its own.

There is so much depth and wonder to explore within Indonesia’s cultural heritage, and there is one theatre show in Bali that proudly showcases some of the most exciting and inspiring cultural practices the country has to offer.

The Devdan Show at Bali’s Nusa Dua Theatre is one of the most electrifying and awe-inspiring cultural shows on the island.

The performance features cultural dance, song, folktale, and ritual from the islands of Bali, Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, and Papua.

The show is described by the theatre as a “fusion of traditional Indonesian dance activities with modern contemporary dance, world-class aerial acrobatic attractions, dazzling costumes, and hi-tech special effects.” It is a truly memorable event.

The story weaves together cultural practices from these five stunning Indonesian islands. The arch of the Devdan Show story follows two young children who are exploring Bali as part of a guided tour. Bored of the schedule, they set to venture off on their own towards a high cliff that looks interesting.

What they find there transports them across the islands of Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, and Papua to explore the sacred treasures of the archipelago.

If you see just one cultural performance during a visit to Bali, the Devdan Show will introduce you to the most important cultural dances and rituals of the Island of the Gods.

During the scenes set in Bali, audiences are introduced to the Kecak dance. The famous kecak performance tells the story of lovers Ramayana and Sita.

In the story, Sita is kidnapped by evil King Ravana in an enthralling epic that depicts the tale of the triumph of good over evil.

The show also introduced audiences to the less commonly performed lesung dance. This beautiful cultural wonder is an ode to the harvest season.

The dance is traditionally performed by agricultural communities in Bali to show gratitude to the gods for the abundance of the harvest and nature herself.

The final scene in the Bali part of the Devdan Show is a depiction of the Odalan ceremony. This ritual is only normally performed at temples and generally isn’t a cultural practice showcased in cultural shows.

During the Odalan ceremony, Balinese Hindus show their appreciation of the almighty powers of the universe and are reminded of the fine balance of life.

Easily the most mesmerizing part of the show is the ariel performance that tells the story of the fishing port in Kalimantan.

Featuring dancers and performances from the indigenous Dayak community, the chapter of the show transports audiences to the simply stunning landscapes of Indonesian Borneo.

During the scenes set in Papua, audiences are introduced to traditional music, including the Tifa.

This percussive instrument is played like a drum and is traditionally made using deer hide. The Tifa is used in all kinds of ceremonies in Papua.

Thanks Bali Sun for this written article, it will be on a bucket list to look forward next time in Bali. All corners of Indonesia in one showcase cultural performance.

@Randy, Nonsense. Balinese culture is mainly the result of 40 years fake incorporation of a simplification of Javanese, Yogjakarta culture. As for aspects of other regions of Indonesia??? In 30 years of visiting Bali I have NEVER met a single Balinese person who has been across the whole tiny island, let alone to Sulawesi, Maluku province etc. Balinese go absolutely nowhere at all. They are completely clueless about rest of their country.

Not only Indonesia; pre covid reportedly the show had help from prof. chinese acrobats.

As usual, foreigners have to pay much more for the tickets compared to Indonesians. Why do "VIP" Indonesian get a discount compared to foreign "VIP" as these "VIP" Indonesians are not known to be destitute?

@Exp, I still don't know why and where you are going with this issue inside your pessimistic mindset?? Do you have a long list of grudges from living in Indonesia?

In Japan, there is a saying that a foreigner will never be a Japanese even if he or she speaks the language and knows the culture. A similar approach may be related here in Indonesia.

Assimilation is important but on the exterior, it could never match. However Indonesians are welcoming and can be more tolerant but sadly foreigners (or Indonesians who have lived abroad or took on another nationality) take that advantage on a different level because they feel so entitled (low self esteem) and disrespect the host countrymen.

@Exp, What's so sneaky about 2 languages on their website? On English or Russian version, prices differ, ask the them why that is...

Have you been to Chicago? One Museum by the Lake Michigan offer entry tickets for Illinois residents and non Illinois residents. Would you complain to them? Seriously would you or because it is the US, you do not dare to question the authorities.

@Exp, I looked at the picture gallery. They look pretty much Indonesians unless you are Chinese yourself and know the big difference. Actually there is not a problem if so Chinese acrobats (legally to work and earn a living) are performing or trained their Indonesian dancing partners.

So why are YOU so pessimistic as always?? Too long from living in Bali, huh.

@Randy, Foreigners pay much more for the tickets compared to Indonesian citizens. Just look up devdan show tickets online.

They also appears to be using professional chinese acrobats as shown in their promotional video. So it is a bit more than "All corners of Indonesia" covered. But I guess they keep that fact low key.

@Randy, Look up their web page and you will easily identify dual pricing system. It is done very sneakily as you have to change between english and indonesian language and then you will see the price chane accordingly!

I thought this was a news paper not an advertising / information sheet. More and more advertisements posing as "news" are creeping into this paper. I am now cancelling my subscription.
