Bali’s most beautiful village, Penglipuran Village in Bangli Regency, is running a special tourism program to celebrate the Lebaran holiday in Indonesia.
As Indonesia continues to celebrate Eid al-Fitr with a public holiday until 4th April, there are hundreds of special events happening all across Bali, and nationwide.

The Head of Penglipuran Tourism Village Management Wayan Sumiarsa, has spoken to reporters about how all are invited to take part and enjoy the special events that are happening at Penglipuran Village over the coming days. He told reporters “We want to provide the best experience for tourists who come to Penglipuran, especially in the atmosphere of Eid al-Fitr celebrations. We have prepared various cultural attractions and unique experiences so that tourists can experience the richness of Balinese culture directly.”
One of the highlights of the special Lebaran events program for tourists visiting Penglirpuran Village is the daily Barong Macan performance. The Barong Macan is a cultural dance that portrays the truth of good over evil and highlights the importance of balance and harmony with nature.
The performances of the Barong Macan are being held within the magical Penglipuran Village Bamboo Forest, which surrounds the community. Performances will be held every day from 11 am until the 6th April 2025.
The Penglipuran Bamboo Forest is one of the most important green landscapes in Bali and Sumiarsa and his teams hope that tourists will come and explore as much of the 45 hectares of forest as they like during their visit.
He noted “We hope that tourists who come can better understand the philosophy of life of the Balinese people who always prioritize balance with nature. This is not just a tourist spot, but also a place to learn and experience the true beauty of nature.”
Back inside Penglipuran Village itself, there is so much for tourists to explore. For Indonesian tourists, a visit to Penglipuran Village is considered something of a cultural pilgrimage as the village is one of the last pedestrianized communities in the country and is one of the finest examples of a traditional Balinese village in the province.
Penglipuran Village has consistently been named amongst the top tourism villages in the world and has been named a winner at the United National World Tourism Organization Best Tourism Villages in the World competition.
During a visit to the community, tourists can wander through the pedestrianized alleyways, admire the traditional homes and gardens and take part in a range of cultural activities too. One of the most special activities on offer at Penglipuran Village is to take part in a cooking class. During the session guests are invited to make traditional Balinese dishes guided by local village residents.
To max out the magic of Penglipuran Village tourists are invited to stay overnight in one of the homestay guesthouses. For just IDR 375,000 per night, guests can really live like locals.
This also gives guests the chance to wander through the world-famous village without the tourist crowds in the early morning and late evening.
An overnight stay at Penglipuran Village must be accompanied by the ‘authentic dinner’ experience, where a freshly prepared, traditional Balinese meal is served to guests, dining al fresco on the main village street.

Over the coming months, tourists planning trips to Bali will see more promotion of traditional cultural villages, as leaders in Bali look to promote culturally respectful and sustainable tourism even more.
Other top tourist villages include Taro Village, just outside of Ubud, and Jatiluwih Village in Tabanan Regency.

Bali’s Governor Wayan Koster has announced that he wants to rebrand the island’s tourism village as Cultural Villages, to help put cultural preservation front and center.
He announced to the media “Now the nomenclature is ‘Tourism Village’, if this continues to be used, in the long run, the culture will be left behind. Yes, it is pragmatic.”

Adding “Without culture, tourism would not exist, Bali’s main tourist attraction is culture, therefore, culture must be displayed first and built.”
