Bali Expands On Commitment To Improving World-Famous Kuta Beach

Share The Article

Bali’s Kuta Beach is the island’s original resort destination. The coastal getaway is home to everything holidaymakers could want and need from a classic beach vacation.

From affordable hotels to buzzing nightlife, vibrant markets and shopping streets, and great places to eat, it’s easy to see why Kuta is a firm favorite of returning Bali lovers.

It has been widely acknowledged however that Kuta Beach is showing signs of its age.

Over the last year or so, leaders from Kuta Traditional Village, the Badung Regency Government, and the Bali Tourism Board have been working to make much-needed improvements for tourists at Kuta Beach.

Much of the work has already been completed, including the new skate park and picnic area, and work is finishing up on the new beach wall.

One of the biggest threats to Kuta Beach is coastal erosion. It is an issue that leaders have been grappling with for years. Sadly, where coastal erosion has eaten away at parts of the beach, the area looks unsightly to many people.

With this in mind, local leaders have committed funds and essential resources for environmental teams to tackle the coastal erosion on Kuta Beach at the end of the year.

The Kuta Traditional Village Head, I Wayan Wasista, admitted to reporters that in the areas of Kuta Beach where coastal erosion is most severe, the “beach is not pleasing to look at.”

Keen to ensure that the situation doesn’t get any worse, Wasista says efforts to curb erosion by the end of the year will make a noticeable difference for tourists.

A tender process is currently underway for environmental management companies to bid for the government contract. The project will be undertaken as part of the Beach Conservation Project (BBCP) Phase II.

The coastal erosion management strategies that will be employed at Kuta Beach include sand filling, creating four new breakwaters, and reconstruction work on an existing breakwater.

While the work to address coastal erosion at Kuta Beach is essential, there are other more tourist-orientated improvements happening down on the beachfront to help improve the tourist experience further.

As announced earlier in the year, a series of new wooden market stalls have been constructed along the beachfront at Kuta Beach.

These wooden huts, known as the Creative Carts, have been built to help stimulate the local economy and improve the tourist experience of the beach.

It has long been the case that tourists to Kuta Beach have felt hassled by beach vendors who stroll up and down the shoreline selling everything from sarongs and friendship bracelets to cold drinks and massages.

Tourists have often noted that they feel under pressure to buy from the beach vendors who are very persistent when they want a sale.

Local vendors have complained to the authorities that there are no affordable premises for them to set up shop, nor are there areas where they could set up a mobile shop even if they wanted to.

Listening to all sides of the story, the teams in charge of managing tourism on Kuta Beach came together to build the new creative carts that now line the beachfront.

The coordinator of the Kuta Beach Arrangement Team, I Gusti Anom Gumanti, has told reporters that conversations have now begun with local beach vendors to assign creative carts and arrange the distribution of carts to each vendor so everyone has a fair shot at businesses.

Once open in the coming months, hopefully in time for the Christmas and New Year holidays, the creative carts will make it easier for tourists to enjoy a restful and relaxing time on Kuta Beach, armed with the knowledge that if they fancy some cold drinks, a massage or buying some souvenirs to take home they know exactly where to go.

The manager of Kuta Beach, Komang Ruditha Hartawan, spoke to reporters separately and confirmed that “trader arrangements, cart arrangements, and asset arrangements will be carried out,” noting that vendors will also be responsible for playing an active role in keeping Kuta Beach clean for tourists.

Just imagine if you DIDN'T allow the beach front mall to build right up to the ocean...

Then Kuta would not be washing away into nothing...

We've seen King Tides wipe everything off the beach more times than we can count. The new footpath is already in serious trouble from the water undermining it

Quote "Sadly, where coastal erosion has eaten away at parts of the beach, the area looks unsightly to many people."

In not so many years; the famous "Kuta beach" will become "Kuta seawall" as the sandy beach disappear. They can put a wide walkpath on top of the seawall so the business with plastic chairs, bintang umbrellas, massages and other vendors etc can continue. A real eyesore in the making.

@Exp, It's so dumb they couldn't easily tell what development right up to the ocean does to beaches... It's not new knowledge at all...
