Bali Beach Lifeguards Complete Intensive Training To Protect Tourists

Share The Article

Here in Bali, the beaches are the biggest draw for both tourists and international residents to come and stay here a while…or forever!

While most of Bali’s beaches are super safe for swimming, surfing, and paddling in the sunshine, some of the island’s most famous beaches have dangerous undercurrents and are prone to dangerously high waves. Thankfully, we have an incredible lifeguarding team who stand guard so we can all enjoy the best of Bali’s beaches.

Badung Lifeguards have just been in an intensive 5-day training to keep their skills up to scratch to provide the best service to the public. The training focused on the use of jet skis and rubber boats in large waves and strong currents.

Speaking to reporters, the Head of the Badung Lifeguard Kuta UPTD, I Wayan Somer, said the training was focused on helping the team develop their resilience, alertness, and rescue skills according to standards to ensure the safety of tourists in the Badung coastal area.

The Badung Coast is home to almost all of Bali’s biggest and most popular tourism resorts, including Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Canggu, Jimbaran, Uluwatu, and Nusa Dua. Though most of the Badung Lifeguard stations sit between Kuta and Seminyak, and down in the Uluwatu area.

Somer told reporters, “This activity aims to make Badung Lifeguard more visible and recognized internationally. Hopefully, it will have a positive impact going forward and develop reliable human resources to protect the coastal areas of Badung Regency.”

The 5-day training course was a joint initiative of the Kuta and South Kuta Regional Technical Implementation Units (UPTD), which work in different management areas.

Of the 160 Badung Lifeguard members, 105 in Kuta and 55 in South Kuta, 16 participated in the specialist jet ski and rubber boat intensive training. The training was conducted independently as a demonstration of Badung Lifeguard members’ commitment to improving the quality of beach tourism safety services for tourists and residents.

During the training, the cohort of 16 lifeguards not only received updated educational material but also underwent hands-on practice in the water. Those who achieved good grades received a certificate and the title of instructor.

Somer confirmed that the training took place across several beaches known to commonly see extreme conditions in the water, from Legian to Suluban Beach in Uluwatu.

He shared, “We conduct our rubber boat training in these extreme areas because that’s where the members’ mental abilities, courage, and skills are truly tested.”

He confirmed that the final training session took place at Suluban Beach, known for its large waves, strong currents, and popularity with the surfing community, which created the most life-like conditions for the training cohort.

Somer shared, “This training was extraordinary, perhaps the only one of its kind in Badung Regency, or even Bali. We faced many obstacles on the ground, especially in the Uluwatu surfing area.”

Speaking separately, Ni Putu Sastra, Head of the Badung Lifeguard Unit (UPTD) for South Kuta, sang the phrases of the Badung Lifeguards for their commitment and bravery.

She shared, “It requires strong skills, mental fortitude, and emotional resilience. Therefore, we continue to strive for training to maintain the physical and mental readiness of our members so they are always at their best while on duty.”

Adding “We remain committed to maintaining the quality of our human resources through independent training, as Balawisata members are very enthusiastic about participating in programs like this.”

Tourists traveling to Bali’s beaches are always advised to enquire as to which areas are safe to swim and which areas are no-swim zones. Though many beaches where lifeguards are present have flag systems in place, just as many do not.

Some of Bali’s most famous beaches are not safe for swimming or paddling, including iconic destinations like Kelingking Beach and Diamond Beach in Nusa Penida. It’s always best to check!
