Good News For Long Haul Travelers To Bali As Direct Flights From Hong-Kong Resume

Flying into Bali just got easier. This week I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport welcomed back Hong Kong Airlines to the tarmac for the first time since the pandemic began.

Hong Kong Airlines will now offer a direct Denpasar-Hong Kong flight service, making it even easier to access the Island of the Gods.

The new flight route is not only perfect for Hong Kong residents to nip across the South China Sea (and the Java Sea) for a getaway but offers long-haul travelers a convenient layover alternative to Singapore or Kuala Lumpur.

Hong Kong is one of the world’s biggest passenger transit hubs, and Hong Kong Airport remains the world’s busiest air cargo center.

The General Manager of Angkasa Pura I I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, Handy Heryudhitiawan, spoke with reporters shortly after the inaugural Hong Kong Airlines flight to Denpasar on Monday, 17th April.

He confirmed that flight CRK707 landed at 6.30 am and was arriving with 146 passengers from Hong Kong. The return flight departed at 9.05 am carrying 281 passengers.

The inaugural flight was welcomed to the tarmac with a ceremonial water cannon salute, and passengers and crew were welcomed into the terminal building with flower garlands and plenty of smiles.

Heryudhitiawan shared his hopes that the new flight route will improve connectivity between Bali and Hong Kong, further promoting the Island of the Gods as a destination of choice for locals and ex-pats in the city.

He added, “We hope that the opening of additional routes to and from Hong Kong will have a positive effect on tourism on the island of Bali.”

There has been a clear and concerted effort by tourism officials in Bali to promote and encourage the return of tourists from mainland China to the island. The return of direct flights from Hong Kong to Bali will be taken as a positive step forward by many in the tourism industry.

Heryudhitiawan explained that the new Hong Kong Airlines flight to Denpasar is just one of several new proposed routes to Bali that are set for confirmation in the coming weeks.

He said, “Right now, we are still discussing it with related parties. We hope that by the end of this year, international flight routes can return to the pre-pandemic period.”

Currently, I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport serves five routes to mainland China and its Special Administrative Regions.

These are Shenzhen, Shanghai and Xiamen, Hong Kong, and Taipei. Travelers can expect to see more flight routes to Bali opening up in the coming months.

Bali is in the midst of the low season. It is likely that there will be more new flight announcements ahead of the high season, which starts in July.

The new flight route from Hong Kong is good news for long-haul travelers from North America, Africa, and Europe. Yet, it’s certainly the case that more flight availability and more routes on offer the better for international jet setters.

At the beginning of the year, officials in Bali confirmed that thirteen airlines have applied to schedule new routes in and out of I Gusti Ngurah Rai International.

At the time, no details were given as to which airlines and what routes, with officials stating that until applications had been given the green light, they could not confirm or deny any details.

We now know that Hong Kong Airlines have been given the go-ahead for their direct Bali-Hong Kong route, and in February, Indonesia’s national airline, Garuda Indonesia, confirmed increased flight services across Australia.

Officials were able to reveal that flight requests have been filed by airlines based in the US, China, Russia, Japan, and India.

Garuda Indonesia’s increased flight schedule will make a world of difference for Australian holidaymakers to Bali in this coming high season.

Starting from the 5th of April, the Garuda Indonesia Sydney-Bali service began operating three times weekly and will increase to four times weekly from the 7th of July.

For travelers from Melbourne set to travel to Bali, Garuda Indonesia is upping its service further. As of the 7th of April, the Melbourne-Bali route increased to operating twice weekly.
