Share The Article

With so much culture and history to delve into in Bali, hiring a tour guide is one of the best ways tourists can ensure that they are getting the fullest experience possible while on vacation.

As leaders in Bali look to promote more culture-based tourism on the island, more tour guides are being given training.

This week the Head of the Klungkung Tourism Department Ni Made Sulistiawati and the Head of the Klungkung Culture Department I Ketut Suadnyana have run a 4-day training course for 45 new tour guides.

These newly qualified cultural tour guides will work around Klungkung Regency. The region of Bali is home to iconic destinations like the Nusa Islands, Goa Lawah Temple, and Kusamba Beach.

The Chairman of the Klungkung Tourism Committee, Tjokorda Gde Romy Tanaya, explained to reporters that the aim of the course was for the guides to know more about guiding in the context of cultural tourism.

The newly trained guides were given resources on how to play an active role in promoting, preserving, and reviving Balinese culture and the arts. They have also been given training on making use of digital systems to help enhance their offering to tourists.

This training is part of an island-wide initiative to invest in improving tourism experiences across the board. Bali wants to upskill as many tourism workers as possible to ensure that the island’s hospitality and travel sector remains amongst the best in the world.

Over in Bangli Regency, a similar training course was hosted this week for sixty tourism attraction managers.

The Deputy Regent of Bangli I Wayan Diar told reporters. “The training material is product photography, effective promotional language, stages of digital marketing development, and digital marketing to advance competitive tourism. Participants were also invited to discuss the study cases and practice.”

Tourists can expect to see more creative promotions and tourism experiences coming from Bangli Regency in the months to come. Bangli Rgenecy is home to incredible tourist destinations like Penglipuran Village, Mount Batur, and now three waterfalls that have just been given official tourist attraction status.

With 45 new guides out and about in Klungkung Regency, where are the leading destinations that they will want to share with tourists? Some of the arts and cultural destinations and experiences in Klungkung Regency are amongst the most famous in all of Bali, and there are still plenty of hidden gems to uncover.

Cultural Attractions in Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida is a destination perhaps best known by tourists for its natural landscapes, more so than its cultural abundance.

But once the stunning clifftop vistas have been suitably soaked in, there are heaps of cultural wonders to explore in Nusa Penida.

Pura Goa Giri Putri Cave offers tourists an incredible glimpse at deeply reverent Balinese Hindu culture.

The temple is set deep within a cave that has been adorned with offerings and has been the site of ritual ceremonies for centuries.

Cultural Attractions in Klungkung Regency

Klungkung Regency spans across the main island of Bali and the outlying islands of Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Ceningan.

One of the most impressive cultural landmarks to explore in the Klungkung Regency is the Goa Lawah Temple.

Built in the 11th century, the iconic temple was constructed around a bat cave. Pura Goa Lawah literally translates to mean Bat Cave Temple.

The temple is included in the Sad Kahyangan Jagad, known in English as the six sanctuaries of the world.

Tourists are permitted to visit the temple, though they must wear a sarong, dress modestly, and adhere to the guidance of their tour guide or temple management staff.

For tourists looking to take a deep dive into Balinese culture and history, a visit to Kertha Rosa Park in Klungkung Regency is not to be missed.

The 18th-century Balinese Hindu temple is one of the most ornately decorated temples on the island and is surrounded by a peaceful garden complex.

Training new guides seems to be a worthwhile exercise. Was any study done to determine whether tourist numbers warrants them? Perhaps of more importance. Will they be able to work and pick up customers from outside these 2 Regencies. The majority of tourist come from elsewhere.

Guide training is good, maybe teach some at the big temples not to: 1. state before tour that they "expect big tip", 2. state that "tip is mandatory", 3. State "it is not enough tip", 4. lie that things already included in ticket price will cost extra.
