Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport has been named amongst the worst ten airports in the world, according to AirHelp.

The company is the world’s top passenger rights organization that helps travelers access compensation and support when air travel goes wrong.

AirHelp is regarded by the travel and aviation sector as a leader in passenger rights. They specialize in upholding the consumer rights of travelers, tourists, and air travel users.

AirHelp has established a comprehensive survey mechanism that creates the Global Airport Ranking AirHelp Score system.

With 194 airports all around the world featured on the list, Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai International has been ranked the 6th worst in the world.

With the 2023 results just published, tourists are concerned by some of the findings about Bali Airport.

The CEO of AirHelp has said that the survey is simply designed to collate data from the world’s international airports to help tourists make informed travel decisions.

CEO Tomasz Pawliszyn said, “Our goal at AirHelp is not only to educate passengers about their rights and help them enforce them in the event of flight disruptions, but also ensure they have an all-around satisfying flight experience.”

He added “The AirHelp Score uses data to rate airlines and airports across several factors, looking beyond only punctuality or customer feedback…AirHelp Score [can] reflect which airlines and airports offer the best overall passenger experience.”

According to AirHelp Bali Airport scored 6.55 out of a possible 10. The airport scored 5.5 for on-time performance, a fair 7.9 for customer opinion based on customer service, and 8.3 for food and shops.

Bali Airport may have been ranked amongst the worst in the world by AirHelp, but the airport has won several major aviation awards this year. This has got officials at Bali Airport questioning the results.

In response, the Vice President of PT Angkasa Pura, the state-owned company that manages Bali Airport, issued a written statement.

Rahadin Yugisworo said ”AP I, as the airport manager, doubts the results of the survey. Because it is not accompanied by an explanation of the survey parameters in question.”

He noted that in 2023 Bali Airport won several awards including accolades from the Airports Council International (ACI) & Skytrex and INACA.

According to him, eleven airports under the management of AP I have received national and international awards in recent months.

It was not only Bali Airport that ranked lowly by AirHelp in Indonesia. Banjarmasin Airport fell even lower down the ranks on the list of the worst airports in the world, coming in at 194; the worst.

Yugisworo said, “The airport was only inaugurated by the President of the Republic of Indonesia in 2019. If you look at there have been no regular international flights to/from Banjarmasin, it actually has the lowest value.”

Over the last week, Bali Airport has been busier than at any other time this year. The airport broke its own record.

On Saturday 23rd December Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport received 75,240 passengers across inbound and out-bound flights across both the international and domestic terminals, making it the airport’s busiest day ever.

The General Manager of I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport Handy Heryudhitiawan, said “This is a positive signal that the Bali tourism industry is starting to become enthusiastic again. We hope this trend can continue.”

In 2024, officials want to make Bali Airport more efficient for tourists and travelers to navigate. A series of new auto-gates are being installed.

This new technology, alongside changes to the visa process, will make it quicker and easier than ever for tourists to pass through Bali Airport.

Only problem I have is with Limited or No Handicapped assistance like wheelchairs or personnel. Can't stand long in those lines. Takes too long to get own wheelchair from baggage

Reviews and points don’t mean a thing. Whoever made the survey at AirHelp had a bad day at Gusti Ngurah Rai International airport. It’s probably more personal rather than an general outlook.

The airport has improved in many ways over the years….Have always found it very annoying that when you arrive they take you rinks off you, then once ready to board you buy another drink and that is also taken of you. It is bought at the airport, is there a problem trusting airport staff, other airports you can even fill up your water bottles and board the plane with water. Very annoying.

Never had a major problem with my 3 trips to Bali except that it takes time to clear immigration, more time than Jakarta. Perhaps it varies with how many flights alight.

Visa and immigration wait times are horrendous on arrival. The worst in any airport I've ever been in. It's been that way for three last 20 years I have holidayed in Bali.....an ordeal to be endured before we can enjoy our holiday in Bali.

@Jill Murdoch, seriously, a White friend landed a few days ago and told me it was fluid and fast considering the number of arrivals gearing up for the new year in Bali. The friend was impressed.

One biased entitled person’s point of view does not speak for the rest of us foreign travelers.
