A top luxury hotel resort in Bali experienced a major fire over the weekend.

The Ulaman Eco Luxury Resort, located just north of Canggu, has been undertaking major new expansion work, much of which has been destroyed by the fire.

The Ulaman Eco Luxury Resort is one of Tabanan Regency’s most impressive 5-star hotels. Built almost entirely of natural materials, mostly bamboo and rammed earth, the luxury resort has won multiple awards for its environmentally sustainable and highly innovative design.

Bali is home to a high concentration of the world’s best hotels, many of which have won international acclaim not only for hospitality but for architecture and design too.

In an official statement from the owners of the Ulaman Eco Luxury Resort, the team are keen to communicate that though the fire has devastated much of construction sites and buildings in the new expansion area of the resort, that the main resort complex remains open, operation, safe and eager to welcome guests and non-residents to experience the magic of Ulaman.

The resort owners have shared “We are saddened to share that a fire broke out [on 15th August] , completely destroying Ulaman 3 (Grand Jewel Villas) and our Cliffside Yoga Shala. Most importantly, everyone is safe. Thanks to the swift action of our staff and crew, the fire was contained and other areas remain unaffected.”

The new Phase 3 of the hotel complex was due to open and operate in September 2025 and feature 1-bedroom retreats, 2-bedroom escapees, and 4-bedroom havens, each offering a private saltwater pool and open-air living.

The official statement continues, “Yoga and sound healing sessions will continue at another location. Ulaman 1 and 2 remain open, including: Ulin Poolside, Cocoon Jungle Villas, Avatar Tree House Villas, Floating Lake Villas, Jungle Garden Pool Villas, Riverside Spa, Meeting Hall, E.A.R.T.H Lounge & Restaurant, Gym, Reception and Tennis Court.”

The resort adds “All day passes, restaurant reservations, and bookings continue as normal. Guests with Ulaman 3 bookings, please contact us below. Though we are heartbroken, our spirit remains strong. We look forward to welcoming you at Ulaman Eco Luxury Resort.”

As rumours regarding the cause of the fire and the impact on the staff and construction teams began to spread, Ulaman has been issuing statements throughout the weekend.

In one social media comment, the hotel shared, “Our staff are safe and well. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. While the damage is significant, the spirit of Ulaman remains strong. We are deeply grateful to our local village for their immediate support and kindness.”

In a statement issued on Sunday, 17th August, Ulaman communicated, “There have been concerns about our construction workers – please know they have shelter, food, and the necessary support, following a meeting held with them today. Additional housing will also begin construction on Monday to further support them. We are so thankful for the kindness and support shown by our local village and community.”

Although built with almost all natural materials and with a strong environmentally sustainable focus, the Ulaman Eco Luxury Resort feels almost futuristic. In fact, many have compared the hotel to the homes depicted in The Avatar movies.

Ulaman explains, “Our award-winning vision and commitment to eco-living and sustainability principles have been evident since the beginning. We’ve designed Ulaman using all local, sustainable, and eco-friendly materials, some sourced directly on-site. Our structures feature locally sourced bamboo and ‘Rammed Earth’ walls, exposing natural elements like earth, sand, lime, and gravel.”

The resort further explains, “Eco-conscious practices are integral to our daily operations, including a solar power facility, a no-plastic policy, organic gardens, composting, natural pest control, chemical-free amenities, and filtered well water. These initiatives demonstrate our dedication to leading the hospitality industry in minimizing environmental impact through sustainable operations.”

While it is highly recommended to book a lengthy stay at Ulaman Eco Luxury Resort to fully immerse in the experience, tourists to Bali are able to access many of the hotel’s world-class facilities via the Riverside Spa and E.A.R.T.H Restaurant.

A resort basically built over a Bali river downstream of many villages. I can imagine the condition and smell of that river after heavy rainfall.
