Sanur is fully feeling itself in its new chapter as Indonesia’s leading health and medical tourism destination.
With the Bali International Hospital now fully operational and having celebrated the birth of the first baby born at the hospital, it seems that the only way is up for Sanur right now.

Sanur is Bali’s oldest tourism resort and over the last 60 years has seen a series of different chapters. Over the last five years, millions of dollars have been poured into Sanur to transform the area into its newest iteration as a world-leading health and medical tourism destination known as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ).
As described by the Indonesian Tourism Board, Wonderful Indonesia explained, “Special Economic Zones are areas with special rules to attract investment and are meant to grow the economy. Sanur SEZ is the first Indonesian health and wellness zone, blending world-class medical care with Balinese healing traditions.”
Wonderful Indonesia continues, “In Sanur SEZ, step into 4.9 hectares of ethnobotanical garden where yoga spaces, open-air spaces, and sacred melukat rituals are situated peacefully in the heart of the garden. It’s not just recovery, it’s a transformative journey.”
They add, “Bali International Hospital and Centres of Excellence are setting a new global standard in healthcare through advanced technology, trusted experts and world-class innovation.”
The Sanur Special Economic Zone is managed by InJourney, who also oversee many of the leisure and lifestyle spaces within Indonesia’s airports. InJourney President Director Maya Watono spoke to reporters about the future of the Sanur Special Economic Zone and what international health, medical, and wellness tourists can expect from a visit or stay in the resort.
Watono told reporters, “We project that the Sanur Special Economic Zone (SEZ) will open up thousands of new job opportunities and encourage an increase in the number of international tourists visiting Indonesia for tourism and medical treatment.”
It’s clear that as a holding company for state-owned enterprises in the aviation and tourism sectors, InJourney has positioned the Sanur Special Economic Zone (SEZ) as its flagship project to support Indonesia’s goal of becoming a regional health tourism hub.
This SEZ is projected to employ over 18,000 workers and retain up to IDR 86 trillion in foreign exchange annually. One of the big visions for the Sanur Special Economic Zone is that it will compete with major medical tourism destinations across Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, and South Korea.
During the official inauguration of the Sanur Special Economic Zone on Wednesday, 25th July, presided over by President Prabowo Subianto, leaders within the businesses behind the Sanur SEZ development spoke to reporters.

The CEO of Danantara Indonesia, Rosan Roeslani, shared hopes that the Sanur SEZ will sustain itself as a strategic asset, especially in the tourism and health sectors, for Indonesia nationally.
Roeslani explained, “We ensure these assets are optimally managed to encourage investment growth. Through the Sanur Special Economic Zone (SEZ), we see great potential to attract global investors in two major industries that are driving the national economy: the healthcare and tourism sectors.”

Speaking separately, the State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) Minister, Erick Thohir, emphasized the importance of providing high-quality domestic healthcare services as well as attracting international tourists to the area.
He shared,” Every year, around 2 million of our people seek medical treatment abroad, spending nearly Rp150 trillion. This is a major challenge that must be addressed systematically, and the Sanur Special Economic Zone (SEZ) is part of the solution.”

The Bali International Hospital is the heart of the Sanur Special Economic Zone for Health and Medical Tourism. The brand new hospital offers patients access to Cardiology, Oncology, Neurology, Gastroenterology, Orthopedics, Stem Cell, Aesthetic Surgery, Fertility Treatments, Eye Specialists, and Geriatrics.
Just steps away, tourists can rest, recover, or even prepare for treatment with a stay at The Sanur. The 5-star dual hotel resort area is home to The Meru Sanur and Bali Beach Hotel, which is the tallest hotel in Bali, featuring 10 floors and 274 rooms.

Any foreigner and local Balinese should go to doctors with degree from Jakarta University of Indonesia, other could be potentially be not up to the level. Also the ones with degree and further qualification from Australia and similar Unis. So do not look the structure but the curriculum of the doctors themself.

@Firechef, The old Bali Beach InterContinental Hotel was built in 1966. The hotel was a project initiated by Indonesia's founding president, Soekarno. Hence we can assume that "special" rules applied.

How are the rates over at Sanur Int Hospital compared to the other private hospitals in Bali? Or is the concept that if you need to ask you can not afford it?
And how many % of the doctors working there are well reputed international specialists?
