North Bali Airport Plans Show Development Of Bali Aerocity

Share The Article

As stakeholders continue to hold high hopes that the North Bali Airpot will be given a final and irreversible go-ahead from the authorities, the project plans are worth revisiting.

The project site will see not only the creation of North Bali Airport itself but also an aerocity, what is being described as an aerotropolis, a power plant, and more.

The development of North Bali Airport is proposed for reclaimed offshore land off Kubutambahan, a 40-minute drive from Lovina and a scenic 90-minute drive from Amed.

BIBU Panji Sakti, the company behind the project, says that “the airport is planned to be able to serve 50 million passengers at the ultimate stage.”

“The airport is about 600 ha, 8 masl, equipped with 2 parallel runways, parallel taxiway, modern passenger terminal building, general aviation terminal, cargo terminal and of course ATC Control Tower.”

They have confirmed that “This final selected location is considering that offshore locations are safer for aircraft movement. This location also minimizes the impact of evictions of residents, does not interfere with the existence of temples and holy places, and does not interfere with the productive land.”

The North Bali Airport site is set to include much more than just the airport. BIBU Panji Sakti says, “To complement the airport’s operations, Aerocity is planned to be built. The location of Aerocity 1 is on the west side of the airport with an area of 100 Ha, while Aerocity 2 is on the east side of the airport with an area of 200 Ha.”

As described by the designers, Aerocity 1 is planned for activities related to public services. They say that the “infrastructure [that will be] prepared includes hotels and recreation centers, conventions, exhibition halls, world-class higher education, world-class hospitals, and medical examinations as well as other facilities for human well-being.”

This area of the complex will also include a shopping mall. Plans published on the BIBU Panji Sakti website suggest the mall will be called Bali Paradise Mall.

With ICON Shopping Mall opening up in Sanur next month, Bali is looking like it will soon be able to compete with the likes of Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur.

Conversely, Aerocity 2 will be dedicated to operations, logistics, and goods. According to BIBU Panji Sakti, “the infrastructure prepared includes logistics, warehousing, just-in-time services, MRO and other facilities for the repair and movement of goods with modern facilities.”

In addition to North Bali Airport and Aerocity 1 and 2, the huge development project will also include the development of the ‘aerotropolis’ BIBU Panji Sakti says, “To distinguish between airport support activities that are off the coast and those on the mainland, we distinguish the name Aerocity for locations located on off shore and Aerotropolis on the mainland.”

The airport developers add that “Aerotropolis on the mainland is an industrial and tourism activity with the concept of empowering the community. The land used is in cooperation with the landowner community regarding rental patterns and revenue sharing. Under this scheme, land ownership will remain in the community.”

Developers have also committed to ensuring that as much green technology as possible can be used for power at North Bali Airport.

Plans explain, “The power plant will be built to meet the electricity needs of the airport as well as Aerocity and Aerotropolis. The selected power plant technology is an environmentally friendly technology (Green Technology).”

The Director of PT BIBU Panji Sakti Erwanto Sad Adiatmoko told reporter that he and his teams will continue to lobby for the both permissions and funding to bring the project to life.

He dismissed questions that suggested that the incoming president gave his backing to th project only as par of his political campaign.

Adiatmoko concluded “From eight years ago until now, we have remained consistent that the airport we are preparing is the best. We are not building in Bali. We are building Bali.”

Why not tell us who you are doing all this lobby effort for this mega project? Could it be the Chinese waiting in the wings to finance, construct and operate?

Similar assurances were made about building the new capital Nusantara, but of course they were all lies. Business as usual.

I'm impressed!

They've just found another 15 million passengers a year plus an 'aerocity'. That's now 50 million, 10 times Ngurah Rai.

If you live or work in Buleleng do what ever you can to stop it.

Can you imagine the traffic congestion. The rampant development, the totally inadequate infrastructure....

You'll potentially have Kuta/Legian on steroids.

Google it...Joni Mitchell, Big Yellow Taxi.
