Couple Goes Missing After Trying To Cross Bali Strait on Jet Ski

A couple from Semarang, Central Java went missing in the Bali Strait on Friday Oct 16th, 2020 after an attempt to cross from Banyuwangi, East Java to Menjangan Bali on only a jet ski. 

According to a report from Head of Banyuwangi Search and Rescue, Wahyu Setia Budi, 39-year-old Agus Ardianto and a 35-year-old Raras were attempting to go to Menjangan Island in Bali from Baluran National Park in East Java on Friday.

“We have received a report from Arie who is a friend of Agus at around 04.50pm on Friday afternoon Oct 16th 2020, so we immediately deployed our Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) to begin our search,” said Wahyu during an interview on Saturday Oct 17th 2020.

Later that night, the Search and Rescue team aborted their mission due to bad weather and large waves. They began searching again on Saturday morning.

After 17 hours stuck in the middle of the sea, the couple was finally found on Saturday morning at 09.00 am by Coastal Police.

They couple was found on Merak Beach in Situbondo District. Search and Rescue boats from Jembrana and Banyuwangi came to Merak Beach to pick up the exhausted couple.

According to reports, the engine broke down while they were trying to cross the Bali Strait.

Unable to get the jet ski started, they spent the night floating around in the ocean.

At 7:00 am on Saturday morning the couple finally got the engine started and and rode to a nearby beach. 

“The engine broke down when they were  on the way to Bali, but fortunately they didn’t give up and kept trying to start the engine” Wahyu concoluded.
