Bali’s Tabanan Is Home To Natural Wonders And No Tourist Crowds Right Now

Tourism leaders in Bali’s Tabanan Regency have confirmed that visitor numbers have been in decline in recent weeks.

While the end of high season is in sight, visitor numbers are starting to drop, but Tabanan Regency is feeling surprisingly quiet right now, which is good news for explorers who prefer the crowd-free feel.

Latest travel data shows that Tabanan Regency is seeing a decline in the number of visitors this year.

Throughout the first half of the year, the region only welcomed 1.4 million tourists, which is 200,000 people less than in the same period in 2024.

The reduction in visitor numbers has been seen across the board. All of Tabanan Regency’s major attractions, natural wonders, and cultural hotspots have seen a decline in the number of visits.

Tanah Lot Temple, considered to be the most important cultural landmark in Tabann Regency, has seen a comparatively small 763,000 international visitors between January and June 2025, compared to just under one million in the same period in 2024.

Visits to Ulun Danu Beratan have also slumped, and the Eka Karya Botanical Gardens too.

The UNESCO Jatiliwih Rice Terraces have been surprisingly quiet, which, although it is concerning for tourism managers, is fantastic news for tourists.

This stunning natural landscape is usually pumping with tourists from sunrise to sunset, yet there is a small window of time between now and the Christmas high season where visitors are far more likely to be able to enjoy the landscape free from crowds. Until June 2025, Jatiluwih Rice Terraces had only seen 172,000 visitors, 30,000 fewer than in the first half of 2024.

Speaking to reporters, the Manager of Tanah Lot Tourism, Wayan Sudiana, suggested that the decline in visitor numbers was due to a series of factors, including a large reduction in the number of student groups, which he attributed to regional policies and natural disasters.

Speaking separately, the Head of Market for the Tabanan Tourism Office, Wayan Widiatmaja, confirmed that he and his teams are working on new campaigns to welcome more visitors back to the area. He noted, “We are optimistic that Tabanan tourism can be boosted in the second semester through more aggressive promotions, including holding festivals in collaboration with various tourist attractions.”

Widiatmaja also noted how both ongoing international conflicts and domestic travel disasters have influenced travel trends so far this year. Including the road collapse in Bajera Village, which resulted in much of the tourist traffic to attractions like Jatiluwih Rice Terraces and Tanah Lot being redirected onto longer and more congested traffic routes.

Tabanan Regency is an often overlooked gem for tourists planning a vacation in Bali. Most tourists who visit the area do so on day trips from stays in Badung Regency, which is home to resorts like Canggu, Seminyak, and Uluwatu. However, organising a full vacation stay within Tabanan Regency is not only affordable and accessible, but immersive in the Balinese landscape and cultural wonders too.

For nature lovers and culture-curious tourists, a full vacation stay in Tabanan Regency is a smart move. Home to an impressive collection of family-friendly resorts, eco-luxury villas, locally managed guesthouses, and international hotel brands, there is a stay to suit every style in Tababan Regency.
