Bali Tourists Will Soon Have Easier Access To Nusa Penida’s Iconic Viewpoints

Leaders in Bali have confirmed that it will soon be easier and safer to access some of Nusa Penida’s most famous viewpoints.

Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong are amongst the top natural landmarks in the province, welcoming hundreds of thousands of tourists every year.

Nusa Penida is part of Klungkung Regency, and leaders from the local tourism office have confirmed that a new partnership has been made with the Department of Public Works and Public Housing to build a new road that will connect Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong.

The new road will be just one kilometre in length, and 9 metres wide and will allow safer and direct access between the two iconic landmarks.

Officials from government agencies have met with village leaders, local community members and local landowners to ensure that the project has the blessing of all parties.

One local resident told reporters “Many tourists come to Broken Beach and Angel Billabong every day. A decent road is needed to support their comfort and realize sustainable tourism.”

The Head of the Klungkung Office for Public Works, Made Jati Laksana, told reporters “Our initial step is to include this project in the 2025 change budget, while the physical work is planned to be carried out in 2026.”

Tourists visiting both Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong will now see signs installed at both points notifying the public of the upcoming work.

Leaders from the Klungkung Office for Public Works have not detailed how or if the road construction will impact tourist visits in 2025 and 2026, though more updates are expected in the near future.

The new road development in Nusa Penida is all part of a bigger plan to improve connectivity and infrastructure on the island.

For generations Nusa Penida was an island that depended almost entirely on seaweed farming and fishing for its income, with advent of tourism, the island is rapidly trying to catch up with the changing social landscape, while working to maintain its traditional ways of life.

While Nusa Penida is growing in popularity with tourists month on month, the island is feeling relatively quiet right now. As the final months of the low season play out, tourists in Bali right now have the opportunity to experience Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Ceningan and their most quiet.

Though many tour companies offer day trips to Nusa Penida, the outlying Nusa Islands are well worth exploring over several days.

During a whistle-stop day trip by boat from Sanur on main island Bali tourists can tick off all the major sights of Nusa Penida, Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong included; it is so much more fulfilling to take the time to explore the islands at a gentler pace.

Nusa Penida is home to a number of five-star hotels and gorgeous locally owned and operated guesthouses, B&Bs, and resorts. Whether seeing a luxurious beachfront retreat, or an authentic Balinese island homestay, the Nusa Islands offer tourists plenty of choice.

Highly recommended stays close to Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong include Penida Bay Village, The Aura Penida Hills Villa, and Astiti Penida Resort and Spa.

Tourists exploring Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Ceningan are always urged to keep their wits about them.

Though the islands and their surrounding waters are picture-postcard levels of perfect, there are hidden dangers everywhere. Not all the beaches, bays, and coves in the Nusa Islands are safe to swim.

No swim zones are in place at Kelingking Beach, Diamond Beach, and Angel’s Billabong. Tourists are urged never to enter the water, even if they see other tourists breaking the rules.

Powerful undercurrents and strong waves in these areas have claimed the lives of dozens of people and injured many more.

I was on Nusa Penida recently touring the beauty spots in a SUV, and the roads leading to the car parks were so bumpy and it was like being on a roller coaster. Investment in the roads is greatly needed on the island. Where does the car park charges go to ?!
