Sanur is Bali’s oldest tourism resort. While many think that the island’s OG beach destination is Kuta, here at The Bali Sun, we can assure you that Sanur is the original vacation hotspot in Bali.
Oldest it may be, but Sanur is also the freshest and most innovative resort on the island, too.

Sanur is not only keeping up with the times but is setting the pace, setting the tone, and being the change leaders want to see in the tourism sector in Bali.
The resort has just stepped into its new era as a Special Economic Zone for Medical and Wellness Tourism, and things are looking pretty good over in Sanur, we have to say.
This week, tourism leaders overseeing the Sanur Special Economic Zone, aka The Sanur, have come together to discuss how the area can pioneer low-emission, sustainable tourism in Bali.
Over the next few years, The Sanur is projected to become a low-emission tourism area that prioritizes environmentally friendly mobility and sustainable tourism amid high tourism activity, investment, and the development of the service industry. The whole idea emerged at the “Rejuvenate Sanur” forum held at the Prama Sanur Hotel in Denpasar this week.
The event was a collaboration between the Denpasar City Tourism Office, the World Resources Institute (WRI) Indonesia, and the Bali Net Zero Emissions Coalition. The forum brought together tourism industry players, associations, government officials, and development partners to discuss Sanur’s transformation into a more environmentally friendly, comfortable, and competitive resort.
The Head of the Denpasar City Tourism Office, Ni Luh Putu Riyastiti, told reporters, “Sustainable and regenerative tourism are our shared concerns. We welcome WRI Indonesia’s initiative to decarbonize transportation to make Sanur blue and green. Blue means the sky remains blue and clean, and green means environmentally friendly and equitable, where the benefits are felt by the community.”
The event covered discussions on various aspects of sustainable tourism that directly affect tourists’ vacation experiences. And it’s not the most obvious either. The World Resources Institute Indonesia invited business actors to share their insights on the development of a Low-Emission Zone in Sanur as part of the transformation of the tourist resort to a more environmentally friendly one.
Aspects such as comfort, mobility, air quality, and walkability are important factors influencing the tourist experience and are increasingly cited as reasons tourists choose Sanur over other destinations across the island.
Speaking to reporters, the Chairman of the Bali Regional Leadership Council (DPD) of the Indonesian Tourism Association (HPI), Nyoman Nuarta, believes that The Sanur’s transformation into a low-emission zone could provide a new narrative for promoting Balinese tourism, especially for tour guides in the field.
He shared, “The government wants to make improvements in Sanur, such as reorganizing parking spaces, and now they want a Low-Emission Zone. This is a new storytelling opportunity for us, frontline tour guides, to convey to tourists that sustainable values are starting to be present in Sanur.”

It was not only sustainability experts and tourism association leaders who wanted to push for Sanur to become a Low Emission Zone, but hotel managers too.
Hotel managers and tourism business staff are on the front lines of Bali’s tourism offering, and these are the people who have the most contact with tourists and therefore have a real-life understanding of what tourists, holidaymakers, and travellers are looking for.
Hotel Prama Sanur General Manager I Gusti Bagus Surya told reporters about his optimism for the development of a Low-Emission Zone in Sanur. He shared his belief that the concept will increase Sanur’s competitiveness amidst global tourism trends shifting toward healthy and environmentally friendly tourism.

He shared, “I’m optimistic about this implementation, where travel is determined by the choice of mode of transportation, which is being encouraged to reduce the use of private vehicles and shift to the mass transportation provided in Sanur. It’s efficient and profitable for businesses going forward.”

Sanur has been in a slow and steady transition to becoming a Low Emission Zone for the last year. A new electric shuttle bus service is now on offer for tourists to navigate the resort area affordably, efficiently, and in an eco-friendly way, while major renovations to Sanur’s sidewalks have made the whole area safer and more enjoyable for pedestrians.
