Here at The Bali Sun, we spend a great deal of time researching and tracking the latest travel trends. We keep an eye on emerging travel trends to see which will stand the test of time.
One of the most consistent travel trends that we have seen over the last couple of years in Bali is the rise of the multi-generational vacation.

The rise of the multi-generational vacation can be seen across Indonesian domestic tourists and international visitors to Bali. It’s not only us here at The Bali Sun who have observed this trend, but Chairperson of the Indonesian Travel Agent Association (Astindo), Pauline Suharno, too.
She has spoken to reporters about how families across Indonesia are shifting towards a preference for small group travel, with a focus on the family vacation and multi-generational getaway.
She also highlighted that an increasing trend for large-scale bus trips is currently more common for study tours or companies organizing trips for employees, distributors, community groups and families. Suharno told reporters, “People now prefer to travel in small groups, rather than traveling in large groups like in the old days, traveling by bus. And many are multi-generational travelers —parents, grandparents, their children, and their grandchildren—because they value time together more.”
She noted that the trend of multigenerational travel has been growing since the COVID-19 pandemic and cited that young travellers are in increasing need of funding or donors to travel, and that many of these kinds of trips are supported by financially stable parents who finance the trip.
Suharno noted that the benefits work both ways, noting how younger family members can help support elders while traveling. She explained, “The elderly can’t walk until late anymore, and the children might wake up a little later and relax. For them, vacationing isn’t like it used to be, waking up at 6, having breakfast at 7, checking out at 8, and rushing back after dinner. It’s no longer like that; it’s more about experiencing it for yourself.”
She also explained how technological developments and the ease of convenient and seamless transportation have made tourists increasingly independent when traveling.
Once upon a time, organising travel for a multi-generation family trip or small group tour would have been a logistical nightmare, but nowadays everything can be organised in a few quick clicks. This has also meant that the use of travel agents in a number of destinations has begun to decrease.

Suharno explained that for her Indonesian clients, travel agents are still essential, especially when traveling abroad and language barriers exist. This is also something that international tourists to Bali do. She shared, “We sell tour packages where language barriers exist, and travel agents are still needed to run the tour. For example, in China, where language barriers can cause payment issues, people don’t know how to proceed. That’s a huge market for Indonesian travel agents.”
International tourists to Bali will certainly see more family groups of travellers during their vacation. This is, more than anything, because Bali is a family-friendly destination. We often think of family-friendly in terms of being child-friendly, but in the case of Bali, family-friendly means open and welcoming of families of all ages. Due to the financial constraints on young people, as mentioned by Suharno, more and more adults are going on vacation with their parents; we see this in Bali all the time.

This travel concept in Bali is made even easier for multi-generation families traveling together, thanks to the huge amount of private villas.
Vacation villas in Bali are the perfect way for families to holiday together affordably, while maintaining personal space.

Top family-friendly destinations in Bali include Sanur and Nusa Dua, Amed and Ubud are also top picks for families looking for a holiday destination that caters to all ages, has plenty of cultural activities to enjoy, good food, easy mobility, and most importantly, great affordability…who’s footing the bill on your next family vacay?
