Nusa Lembongan To Become Bali’s Most Digitalized Tourism Destination

Business leaders and local government officials are coming together to support the digitalization of Bali’s outlying island of Nusa Lembongan.

There is hope that Nusa Lembongan can become Bali’s most digitally connected tourist destination, a move that will help boost the local economy and improve tourist experiences.

A new plan called the Nusa Lembongan Digital Island initiative has been launched at the Nusa Penida festival.

The Klungkung Regency Government has created the Digitalization Acceleration and Expansion Team, and the project has received backing from the Representative Office of Bank Indonesia for Bali Province. With all the big players backing the project, the initiative is primed for success.

Speaking to the media the Head of the Bank Indonesia Representative Office for Bali Province, Erwin Soeriadimadja, said that through this innovation, all tourism economic activities in Nusa Lembongan will use a digital payment system.

“Starting from booking ferry tickets to Nusa Lembongan, local transportation, tourist attraction centers, to hotels, restaurants, and shops, they have accepted non-cash payment systems.”

The project, which will be referred to in short as TP2DD, will also help local communities integrate digital technologies into their everyday lives.

To encourage increased financial literacy in communities across Nusa Lembongan, the Bank Indonesia Representative Office for Bali Province will also provide education and outreach focusing on non-cash payments (QRIS) and the Love Proudly Understand Rupiah program, in the ‘underdeveloped, frontline and outermost’ areas.

This will be developed alongside five more areas of digitalization that will continue to be strengthened, namely the tourism sector, MSMEs, business, Regional Government Transaction Electronification (ETPD), and supporting infrastructure, to provide better and higher-quality services to the community, especially in Nusa Lembongan and Klungkung Regency.

The Regent of Klungkung, Nyoman Jendrika, expressed his hopes for the project and gratitude for the Bank of Indonesia’s support.

He noted, “This digitalization is expected to advance quality tourism, encourage and drive the community’s economy, increase visits and length of tourist visits. And can increase the Regional Original Income (PAD) of Klungkung Regency.”

Nusa Lembongan is one of the most idyllic destinations in Bali Province. Providing tourists with picture-perfect island views, authentic island vibes, and the ideal mix of local life and tourist home comforts, visitors have been known to extend their stays time and time again.

It is the sort of place that has tourists coming back for more, and unlike many areas of neighboring Nusa Penida, it has managed to control crowding at its most popular hotspots. 

Nusa Lembongan, like Nusa Penida and Nusa Ceningan, also has blank spots, where mobile signal and data coverage, as well as broadband availability, are limited and, in places, non-existent.

Leaders are clear that they want to see the Nusa Islands sustainably developed into world-class tourist destinations, and this requires levelling up utilities and supporting infrastructure.

The move to develop more digital infrastructure in tourist hotspots like Nusa Lembongan will help tourists plan their visits ahead of time and help them organize more of their travel itineraries independently.

The focus on digital development in the tourism sector is also a focus nationwide. Later this month, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economies is set to launch its new Digital Nusantara Tourist Information Center.

The site will be a centralised platform providing tourists with travel information for the whole of Indonesia, ranging from world-renowned destinations like Bali to emerging destinations like Sumba and off-the-beaten-path destinations like Pulau Weh in Aceh. 

Speaking to reporters, Dwi Marhen Yono, Director of Tourism Marketing of the Archipelago of the Ministry of Tourism, shared, “With TIC Digital Nusantara, traveling will be easier and more fun. Tourists can get complete and safe information.”

She added, “We want to pamper tourists with complete and easily accessible information. Hopefully, this will have a positive impact on all elements of tourism in Indonesia.”
