New Bali Amphitheater Coming To Enjoy Mountain Views In A Whole New Way

Although hiking activities on Bali’s mountains have been banned in recent weeks by the provincial Governor, Wayan Koster, development in and around the island’s most iconic volcano remains underway.

A new amphitheater will be built in Kintamani for cultural shows and will offer breathtaking views of Mount Batur. 

A new amphitheater will be built close to the Segara Temple at Lake Batur in Kintamani. The stage will be positioned so that performances are framed by the breathtaking views of Lake Batur, Mount Batur, and on a clear day, even Mount Agung.

The multi-billion Indonesian rupiah project has been signed off by the Head of the Bangli Tourism and Culture Office, I Wayan Sugiarta.

In a statement, Sugiarta said that the move to build an amphitheater will help attract more tourists to enjoy the Segara Temple.

He said, “The function of the stage is multifunctional. In addition to tourism purposes, it is also used for sacred dances that must be performed during religious ceremonies at Segara Temple. For example, the Baris Gede dance.”

The project is now in the tender process, with many contractors applying to take on the build. Sugiarta said, “The construction process is now only in the tender stage. There are already 15 bidders. Construction work takes 150 calendar days or five months.”

Funding has been allocated from the central government as part of a Special Allocation Fund which means that the money can only be used for this initiative in a use-it-or-lose-it style agreement.

The controversial ban on hiking activities on Bali’s twenty-two mountains will undoubtedly prompt more innovation in and around Mount Batur and Mount Agung.

There is a concerted effort underway by tourism stakeholders in Bali to promote cultural and spiritual tourism to the masses.

The move to establish an amphitheater for regular cultural shows with such an unrivaled backdrop of Mount Batur and the expansive lake will surely draw in the crowds. 

The most famous amphitheater in Bali is at Uluwatu Temple. Located at the very south of the island, tourists from all over the world make the journey to the end of the island just to watch the mesmerizing Kecak fire dance.

The dance was created in the 1930s and has proven to be the most popular cultural show with tourists for the last fifty years.

The enigmatic Kecak dance tells the story of Ramayana, the love story of Rama and Sita, and the triumph of good over evil. 

The Kecak perforce at Uluwatu Temple is a cultural highlight not to be missed during any visit to Bali.

The performance takes place as the sunsets over the island, and so audiences are gifted with a two-for-one spectacular show of dazzling culture and mother nature.
