Tourists on the lookout for unique handicrafts, textiles, clothing, trinkets, and treats from their trip to Bali should seriously consider taking a trip up to the north.

Handicraft vendors and artists in Bali’s northernmost beach resort are preparing for the high season and are ready to share their wares with the world.

As the resorts of Canggu, Uluwatu, Seminyak, Legian, Kuta, and Nusa Dua brace to welcome huge influxes of tourists over the coming weeks, vendors in the sleepy coastal village of Lovina are hopeful that tourists will venture northward to explore the quieter shores of Buleleng Regency.

As the long school holidays get underway, handicraft traders and beach stall vendors are ready to welcome tourists and have plenty of goodies to share with them.

It is known for its black sand beaches, dolphin-watching tours, coral reefs for snorkeling and diving, as well as its serene atmosphere compared to the busier southern coast of Bali. Local Lovina handicraft trader Gede Yogi spoke with reporters about how the popular beach resort has prepared to welcome both international and domestic tourists alike. Yogi said, “We have prepared ourselves to attract visiting tourists.”

He specified that products and stalls have been rearranged to make the area feel more open and welcoming; many vendors have sourced new products to share with tourists, and prices have all been checked and are deemed fair and reasonable.

Murtini, who sells all kinds of locally made fashion accessories, told reporters that the manual creation process behind every item she sells adds to its artistic value and uniqueness.

She explained “the strategy that I apply is to explain to tourists that the producted being sold are handicrafts made manually, because they, especially foreign tourists, will be more interested in artistic things.”

For many Bali lovers, the quiet and understated authentic charms of Lovina make the resort quite appealing.

Aprilia Utami, a young Indonesian tourist, told reporters that they intentionally booked a second visit to Lovina because of the quiet beachside retreat the village offers. She also enjoyed the tourism facilities on offer and the overall cleanliness of the area. Utami told reporters, “I deliberately came to Lovina Beach for the second time because the sunset was beautiful, and I feel comfortable there.”

It is not only handicraft shopping that tourists can enjoy in Lovina; in fact, the village offers everything tourists could ask for in an ultra-relaxed coastal getaway.

The beach is quiet, offers plenty of space for sunbathing, and is safe to swim in most stretches of the beach too. The sunsets are incredible, and the sunrises are too. It is well worth the early alarm call at least once during a vacation in Lovina.

While hotel and resort options may initially feel limited compared to booming destinations like Uluwatu or Canggu, the options on offer in Lovina are of such high quality and affordability that it almost makes booking a trip that much easier.

There’s less to think about and way more to enjoy! Lovinalife Room & Cafe is a wonderful budget-friendly option situated just steps from the beach.  For something a little more up-market, take a look at The Lovina Bali Resort, Banyualit Spa and Resort Lovina, or the Padmasari Resort Hotel.

Lovina is perhaps best known to Bali lovers as the home of dolphin watching. Sunrise bait tours to go dolphin watching are the most in-demand tourism activity in Lovina, and while sightings are never guaranteed, the resident pods of dolphins are available multiple times a week, giving tourists a high chance of success.

Tourists are encouraged to do their research before booking a boat tour to go dolphin watching. It is best to go on a weekday rather than a weekend and to choose an operator who has committed to responsible wildlife tourism practices.

In the past, there have been reports of boat operators hounding and trying to shepherd the dolphins with the boats, which causes the highly sensitive dolphins huge amounts of stress, and makes for an unpleasant experience for tourists too.
