During the virtual trial on Wednesday (25/8), the Prosecutor named Ni Ketut Mulyani stated that both suspects who used to operate small businesses in Bali were previously arrested for getting involved in drug trafficking in Bali. “Prior to the arrest, the suspects have managed to distribute around 22kg of cannabis within 1 week, after receiving the drugs from a man named Manek who is now a fugitive.” Mulyani said on Wednesday.

Prior to the arrest, Rusdianto was called by Manek on his cellphone on April 24th 2021 around 10:30am, informing him that he was about to receive several packages of cannabis weighing around 24kg at his place in Denpasar. Shortly after, Rusdianto immediately called Okem and informed him about the delivery. Once they received the package, they sold as much of the cannabis as they could within a week before they were arrested on April 29th 2021.

Both suspects were arrested at two different locations in Denpasar by the Denpasar Narcotics Investigation Bureau. “Rudianto was arrested at his place on Jalan Kebudayaan, Sesetan and Okem was arrested in Pemogan, Denpasar on the same day on April 29th 2021. And apparently they’ve already managed to sell 22kg out of the 24kg of cannabis Denpasar.” Muliani concluded. Both of them will potentially face a life sentence at the prison for violating the Indonesian Narcotics Constitution. Their attorney who also attended the virtual trial didn’t file any exception after hearing the demand from the Prosecutor, Muliani, to his clients.

Life sentence for cannabis seems very extreme, especially when you consider they have lost their busenesses and have little or no chance of finding work due to the pandemic.

Now is the time for prosecutors to crush these evil drug dealers and force them to name every single person who bought the drugs from them. Give them a 30 day reduction in the life sentence in exchange for every name. Or, let them rot in dark solitary confinement for the duration of the life sentence. Let no family member benefit from drug crimes, confiscate every possession and acct proven to have been acquired from the proceeds of crime. Foreigners, including the drug addled tourist influencers and greedy bar owners who have likely been the contact point for distribution should also have all possessions confiscated after forensic audit. The arrest of one high volume drug dealer could prove to save the lives of many children. Bravo for the good police work.

@Wayan Bo, Exactly. In so many countries in the world the use of cannabis is now legal and punishments for illegaly selling cannabis have come down too. I hope Indonesia will follow soon. I am not a smoker but i know marihuana is pretty harmless. Nothing compared with alcohol.

@J West, People don’t die because of cannabis, but because of alcohol.

I don't feel sorry for the two arrested for possession of Canabis. They should have known better. You respect the rules of the country that you are in. It's as simple as that.

@Lisa, as well as Shariya laws too, or better don’t even think to travel there. If anybody born there, can ask in free country for Asyl.
