Two Cafe Owners Sentenced Seven Days In Jail For Breaking Health Protocols

Two café owners were trialed at he Denpasar Court House on Wednesday (2/12). The defendants were found guilty of neglecting prevention protocols while operating their businesses.

The cafes were held responsible for hosting crowded gatherings without maintaining physical distancing along Jalan Badak 1 and Jalan Tukad Gangga. The violations were brought to police’s attention by nearby residents who were irritated by the excessive noise. 

Head of Denpasar Public Civil Service Officer, Dewa Gede Anom Sayoga, explained that the restaurant owners were violating the Regional Regulation Number 1 Year 2015 about Public Order.

The trial was led by Judge I Dewa Made Budi Watsara.

“The owners did carry out health protocols, such as sanitizing and handwashing stations at the property, but unfortunately they facilitated massive crowds which made it impossible to physically distance, and the music was far too loud” Watsara addressed.

The onsite officers confirmed that the cafe directed loud music in late evening without having the permit to do so.

Both cafe owners have been sentenced with seven days imprisonment or a fine of USD14 (IDR 200,000). The officers claim the purpose of this punishment was to create a deterrent effect as an example to others, in order to prevent such incidents in the future.
