Tourists travelling to Bali’s Nusa Penida are being urged to be extra mindful of their belongings.
The update comes after Nusa Penida Police have confirmed that they are investigating four cases of theft reported on the island in the last month.

Nusa Penida is considered one of the safest and most relaxed areas of Bali, as is Nusa Lembongan, where one of the reported cases occurred.
The island of choice for many day trippers and those seeking a slower pace on vacation, Nusa Penida is also growing in popularity.
Nusa Penida Police have this week held a press conference to share details of four thefts reported by tourists in October and November to date.
Nusa Penida Police Officers have confirmed that five suspects have been arrested in connection with the thefts and that charges will be pressed. Nusa Penida Police Chief, AKP I Ketut Kesuma Jaya, confirmed that the thefts included valuables and cash.
The first major case of theft was reported by a tourist from Kazakhstan, who claimed that their bag had been stolen. Police have confirmed the arrest of a 21-year-old and a 33-year-old from West Nusa Tenggara in connection with the case.
AKP Jaya also confirmed a case of embezzlement resulting in the arrest of a 27-year-old from South Lampang. A series of construction cables was also stolen by two men from Buleleng Regency.
AKP Jaya shared, “The evidence that was also secured included bags, cellphones, passports, wallets, pieces of copper cable, and equipment used by the perpetrators in their actions.” He added, “We are committed to maintaining a safe and conducive public order and security situation in the Nusa Penida area. We urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately.”
Tourists traveling to Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Ceningan, and, in fact, any destination in Bali are reminded not to let their guard completely down on vacation. While the destination is incredibly safe compared to other parts of the world, tourists must also take responsibility for their belongings and remain vigilant for suspicious behavior.
Nevertheless, some thefts and crimes cannot be prevented, and victims are never to blame.
Tourists who have observed suspicious behavior or have become victims of a crime are urged to report the incident to the police as soon as possible.

Despite urban myths to the contrary, Bali Police do a good job of locating and rescuing stolen items. The police only have a chance of tracking down criminals if a report is lodged, and the opportunity of recovering items is increasing dramatically if a report is made as quickly as possible.
Over the Christmas and New Year holidays, there is always a spike in the number of theft reports against tourists.

As the party season gets underway, opportunistic thieves operate in busy nightlife areas such as Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, and Canggu. Tourists are also urged to be mindful of the security protocols in place at their private rental villas.
Over the festive season each year, there is often a spike in the number of robberies at these kinds of properties.
Tourists are advised to double-check that doors and windows are locked before leaving the property, and to ensure that valuables are not visible from the window. Tourists are urged to keep valuable items in a safe if available.

Tourists traveling to Bali are reminded that travel insurance is a vital necessity. Not only does a comprehensive travel insurance policy provide coverage for travel-related changes and medical emergencies, but it also covers incidents such as the theft of valuables or the loss of high-value items.
In the event of theft, most policies will not pay out unless a police report can be submitted as evidence of the case.
