At first thought, Bali may be considered a small island. Yet, in reality, the popular resort destination is 5,780 km2 and is home to a diverse range of cultural and environmental landscapes.
The island is managed as nine regencies, the most frequently visited by tourists is Badung Regency, yet there is one lesser-known district that is gaining more and more attention.
Bangli Regency may not be home to as many famous destinations as Badung Regency, but the area has so much to offer tourists.
Data shows that travelers from all over the world are making sure to explore Bangli Regency while on vacation.
According to the Bangli Regency Tourism and Culture Office, revenue from the area’s most famous destinations is pouring in.
In fact, Bangli Regency has already surpassed its tourism targets for this point in the year. Speaking to reporters, the Head of the Bangli Tourism Office, I Gede Putu Budiastawa, explained his relief that interest in the area is growing.
@aurabalitour A must-visit in Bali ✨ The village is just 30km from Ubud and the best time to visit it is during the Balinese religious Galungan & Kuningan holidays which will next take place on 2-12 August 2023. #bali #panglipuran #desapanglipuranbali #balitravel #ubud #balitourservice #balidestination #balitrip ♬ suara asli – AURA BALI TOUR
Speaking about the tourism levies sent to the Tourism Office from the regency’s five most popular destinations, Budiastawa said that the situation is looking good.
He said, “We are optimistic that we can reach IDR 45 billion [this year] as long as there are no extraordinary conditions. Suppose there is a pandemic like before, or a war or an incident of terrorism that disrupts world tourism. If the situations like now, we are optimistic this can be achieved.”
By the end of June, Bangli Regency Tourism Office had generated 65% of their tourism levy targets for the year. The top tourist destination in Bangli Regency is the iconic Penglipuran Tourism Village, closely followed by destinations like the Kintamani, Lake Batur & Batur Temple, and Cepung Waterfall.

Many tourists couple a visit to the Penglipuran Village with a walk about the surrounding bamboo forest. The dense bamboo jungle is absolutely break-taking and, again, is one of the best examples of a well-preserved bamboo ecosystem in Bali.
It is best to visit Penglipuran in the early morning or late afternoon. The village welcomes upwards of 3,500 visitors every day, and experiencing the magic of Penglipuran in its quieter moments is truly memorable.
Kintamani is a must-visit destination in Bangli Regency. Overlooking the stunning Mount Batur, Lake Batur, and deeply significant Batur Temple, Kintamani is one of the most picturesque locations in Bali.
The town is also home to some of the best coffee shops on the island.
Coffee served in Kintamani is grown just kilometers away on the cool forested ridges that run all the way through to the summits surrounding Lake Batur.
Bali is rightly proud of its coffee production, and a visit to Kintamani is the perfect place to taste-test the magic beans at the source.
No visit to Bangli Regency is complete without a visit to Lake Batur, which many say is a real highlight of a visit to Bali.
The glistening caldera lake is surrounded by volcanos, Mount Batur, Mount Abang, and on a clear day, visitors can even capture a glimpse of sacred Mount Agung.
The Trunyan Hills also overlook Lake Batur, which has become a much-loved destination for glamping and camping. For anyone looking for a romantic night sleeping beneath the stars, book a stay close to the banks of Lake Batur.
