Tourist Favourite Bali Club Lays Off 157 Staff As High Season Begins

Bali’s iconic FINNS Recreation Club has confirmed that it will be laying off 157 of its staff.

The recreational club is one of the biggest social venues in Bali Province and welcomes hundreds of thousands of guests every year. 

FINNS Recreational Club is just one of dozens of businesses in Bali’s Badung Regency that are laying off a huge number of staff.

Earlier this year, PT Coca Cola Bottling Indonesia laid off dozens of staff, and now FINNS Recreational Club is following suit. FINNS Recreational Club is the sister venue to FINNS Beach Club, located at Berawa Beach in Canggu.

FINNS Recreation Club has let 157 people go this month, and management has been talking to the media to confirm the details of the process.

Speaking to reporters, Wayan Wirawan, Director of PT Bali Mitra Internasional (FINNS Recreation Club), accompanied by the company’s HR Manager, Kadek Kharisna Gamentra, explained that the layoffs have been implemented in accordance with changes in the company’s business strategy.

The pair noted that the company had previously focused on the recreation sector, but moving forward, the focus has shifted to a more resort-like business. The transition process has been in effect for the last two years, and this series of layoffs has been in the pipeline for months.

Gamentra explained, “These workers chose to stop working to switch to running their own businesses.” Severance packages have been offered to 157 employees, of whom 98 were permanent employees, 16 who took early retirement, and 43 contract employees. 

Wirawan emphasized to reporters that all workers’ rights have been honored and that the Badung Regency Industry and Manpower Service (Disperinaker) has verified the reports of the mass layoffs.

Eka Merthawan from the Badung Regency Industry and Manpower Service told reporters, “We really regret and express our deep concern over the situation that has befallen the workers.”

“The Badung Manpower Office will continue to prioritize a social dialogue approach and fair resolution between management and workers, to ensure that all labor rights remain protected.”

He added, “We really hope that when FINNS Resort reopens in the next two years, management will prioritize the 157 workers affected by layoffs to be rehired.”

Speaking separately, Badung DPRD Chairman I Gusti Anom Gumanti raised his concerns that layoffs are being recorded across the tourism sector in Badung Regency despite the sector looking stable. Badung Regency is home to top tourism resorts, including Canggu, Uluwatu, Kuta, Legian, and Seminyak.

Gumanti told reporters, “The level of tourist visits is quite good. So, it is very strange if the tourism industry, such as starred hotels, other accommodations, and entertainment venues, is reducing its employees.”

The resort spans over 1.7 hectares and both guests and owners will have exclusive access to all of the FINNS venues, including the beach club, the VIP beach club, and the soon-to-be-launched Empire Day and Night Club. 

As it stands FINNS Beach Club is one of Bali’s most popular beach club venues, located Berawa in the increasingly popular resort of Canggu, the venue welcomes a broad spectrum of international holidaymakers. Figures totted up by FINNS show that 17% of all international arrivals visit the venue. 

Finns shared that “Our Beach Club serves 8,800 drinks a day, that’s 265,000 a month. Of those, 2,600 are handcrafted cocktails (79,000 a month), and we see people drink 1,500 beers a day (47,000 a month) too.”
