Serial Thief Arrested For Snatching Phone From Foreigner In Bali

A local from East Java, Agus Priyanto (41) has been arrested by Mengwi Police after snatching a cellphone from a Russian woman on Tuesday (19/1).

Priyanto is not a first time offender, and has previously served time in South Kuta Jail for similar crimes.

The incident occured as the victim, Enina Alena (29) was on a motorcycle with her friend, heading home to Kayu Bunga Villa in Canggu after visiting a friend in Ubud on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident occured in front of Passo restaurant, as Priyanto approached on his motorbike and suddenly snatched the iPhone 12 from her hand.

The victims attempted to chase the perpetrator but lost him at the intersection in Pererenan.

Following the incident, they filed a report to the Mengwi Police Department.

The Head of Mengwi Criminal Investigation Bureau, Iptu Ketut Wiwin Wirahadi, along with the Ambush Team Leader from Mengwi Police, I Made Mangku Bunciana, began investigation.

After collecting statements from witnesses, officers were able to identify the perpetrator and found his location.

“The perpetrator was arrested in front of Likita Hotel on Jalan Buluh Indah, Denpasar at 9:00pm where he attempted to sell the iPhone” said the Head of Mengwi Police Department, Ni Putu Kurniawandari on Wednesday (20/1).

After interrogation, police found that Priyato had committed similar crimes in the past, mainly targeting foreigners.
