The coastal resort of Sanur is about to enter whole new era. In late 2024 Sanur will welcome the formal opening of the new Bali International Hospital.
This will mark a new chapter for the quaint coastal retreat as one of Asia’s leading medical tourism hubs.
As leaders work to strike the right balance between growth, change, and preservation in the coastal community, it is clear that the opening of the Bali International Hospital will be a game changer for the area. The development is also huge news for medical tourists too.
Medical tourism is defined as the practice of traveling abroad to gain access to medical treatment. In most cases, this is because the medical treatment on offer abroad is more affordable than the care available to the patient in their home country.
Many medical tourists also travel abroad in order to access higher quality care than is available to them in their home countries, to access specialist medical professionals or specialist treatments that would otherwise be unavailable to them.
At present, the biggest medical tourism hubs in Asia are Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore, and Indonesia is about to level up its offering with its ASEAN neighbors.
The new Bali International Hospital will focus on providing private medical care for both Indonesian citizens and foreigners who will travel to Sanur, especially for planned medical treatment.
The Bali International Hospital build is all but complete, and teams are now in the process of testing medical equipment and setting up operations systems to ensure that the whole development runs smoothly.
The Indonesian Tourism Industry Association in Bali (GIPI) has given its assessment on how the Special Economic Zone for Health in Sanur will help strengthen tourism on the island and serve as an inclusive tourism destination for international visitors.
The Chairman of the GIPI, Ida Bagus Agung Partha Adnyana, told reporters, “It is certain that Bali will have to develop the brand of health tourism for quality tourists.”
Health tourism in Bali will join the likes of nature tourism, arts and culture tourism, wellness tourism, and spiritual tourism as the niche travel types to receive investment and promotion.
Music tourism, sports tourism, and medical tourism are all to receive support in the coming years in Bali to help ensure the island province offers a full spectrum of tourism experiences to the widest possible traveler audience.
Adnyana noted that the new developments in Sanur tick all the right boxes for a high-quality travel destination. He explained, “To get quality tourists, you need facilities and infrastructure, services, comfort, and security, and they need guaranteed health services at a tourist destination.”
It is not only the Bali International Hospital that will be supporting medical and wellness tourism in the Sanur area.
The whole Sanur Health Special Economic Zone spans over 41 hectares and integrated five star hotels, villas, serviced apartments for elderly living, parks, small business centres and meeting and events halls.
In addition to the medical facilities at the Bali International Hospital further medial services are set to be opened in the Sanur Health Special Economic Zone too.
These will include aesthetic services providers, plastic surgery clinics, stem cell therapy clinics, fertility clinics, dental practitioners, geriatric services and more.
The development of the Sanur Health Special Economic Zone has also seen more investment enter the broader resort area.
The newly opened ICON Bali Mall is one of the largest shopping centers in the province, and more projects are on the horizon. However, not everyone is pleased with the additional developments in Sanur.
The Mayor of Denpasar has this week announced his refusal of a beach club development in the Sanur resort area.
In an interview with reporters the Deputy Mayor of Denpasar, Kadek Agus Arya Wibawa, said that Mayor IGN Nyoman Negara and his teams are following up on a possible application to the Online Single Submission platform to develop a huge beach club in Sanur.
Wibawa revealed, “In principle, Mr. Mayor has given directions to immediately negate the beach club in Sanur because it changes the DNA of the tourism characteristics in the Sanur area.”

Medical care is not a building, not a new paint smell, it is the medical professionals who are available when medical emergencies occur. Thailand and Singapore are far far far and away technically superior to anything available in Malaysia and Indonesia. There is no comparison , especially in oncology and cardiac . Show us who the doctors are, publish the surgery record they offer. Medical tourism should not be considered just another Canggu beach club. attraction. Frankly, the current state of Bali medical could do with an upgrade, otherwise why are so many injured foreigners needing to be airlifted out of Bali if the state of the medical industry is ready, staffed and preparing to welcome foreign patients?

@J West, Are you serious? You made it sound like many are airlifted...NOT really...if tourists are injured each day, then they would not be over mass tourism. Is it...Sigh. Stop being a pessimistic individual like many BULE (Farangs) would be...
Been somewhat disappointed in the service in Thailand (English language barrier) and in Singapore. Well it all depends what you are in for treatment and it’s is more expensive for foreigners rather than for the locals. Singaporeans whom I know go the government provided hospitals with using their medical insurance.
Jakarta has far better medical services and they do speak English.
Back to your many are air lifted...Few of the injured ones needed airlifted because they would rather be treated at home. It’s a choice should their medical insurance covers it and usually are injured Australians with a different mentality. Same thing in France, American friends who have been injured would rather be treated in the States rather than in France (English language barrier). Even thought it may be cheaper out of pocket to be treated in France.
Try Jakarta with the Cancer, Oncology and heart centers, If you know nothing about the Medical services offered, best do your research first. Patients have survived with heart problem history and there are cancer survival patients. Some Malaysians even travel to Jakarta for different treatment.

It will take a long time for Bali to build the trust, reputation, perceived medical and surgical capability before it starts to rival or compete with Malaysia, Singapore or Thailand.

Great idea to keep those noisy beach clubs away from a hospital complex. Well done Mayor!

The new hospital offers world class facilities, equipment and likely international rates. Great, but no word about world class doctors on the job?

@Exp, stop whining !! It is likely you would be the first one using the hospital if you can afford it and if your Aussie meager insurance will cover it. Sigh.
