New Wave Of Tourism Launched In Bali’s Denpasar For Nature Loving Travellers

Bali’s Denpasar has announced the launch of a new marine tourism campaign to help promote sustainability in the area.

Denpasar, best known as Bali’s capital city, is also home to some of the island’s most productive coastline and has played a vitally important role in the island’s prosperity for generations.

The Head of the Denpasar Tourism Office, Ni Luh Putu Riyastiti, hosted the launch of the new initiative aboard the Phinisi Cruise ship in Benoa Harbour.

The Phinisi Cruise Ship hosts sunset dinner sailing trips around Benoa Harbour and is an experience adored by domestic and international tourists alike.

Phinisi is also a type of engineless sailing ship traditionally used by Indonesian traders across the centuries. The Phinisi ship used by the Phinisi Cruise experience is one of the best examples of this kind of heritage vessel in Bali.

Riyastiti and the Denpasar Tourism Office want to promote Denpasar’s marine heritage to a new generation of tourists.

She also sees the potential benefits of developing more marine tourism in the area. Riyasiti explained how developing more marine tourism can help boost the economic prospects of coastal communities in the area and improve environmental protection and sustainability.

Riyastiti told the media “Behind this potential is a big responsibility, namely maintaining marine sustainability, protecting coastal ecosystems, and ensuring that every development step is carried out the principle of sustainability.”

She shared that the launch of the new marine tourism initiative will be in alignment with sustainable and regenerative tourism principles.

As Bali continues to balance on the precipice of localised overtourism, island leaders are ever more aware that any and all future tourism development must adhere to sustainable and regenerative tourism principles for the benefit of local communities, the land, and tourists.

Riyastiti explained, “This concept encourages us not only to ensure that the impact of tourism is not damaging but to be able to repair and restore the ecosystem and the quality of life of local communities.”

Denpasar City is on a mission to welcome more tourists in 2025, and the launch of the new marine tourism campaign is just one way in which leaders hope to encourage more international and domestic visitors to explore the area.

In February, Riyastiti revealed plans to the media for promotions and campaigns that would entice explorers to the area.

She revealed that the Denpasar Tourism Office is targeting to welcome 2.1 million tourists in 2025. The target was informed by data from 2024, which shows that the target of 1.9 million tourists was smashed.

Riyastiti shared, “What will be done to achieve the target is online promotion, utilizing social media collaboration with tourism actors and tourism stakeholders so that they can promote [the destination] while we improve the quality of our destinations and provide events that have been budgeted for.”

Riyastiti added, “We are trying harder to increase promotions through online media and social media, develop the creative economy through creative and cultural events, and collaborate with tourism actors and other stakeholders.”

One of the most important and exciting cultural events of the year in Bali is fast approaching. The Bali Arts Festival is hosted from mid-June to mid-July every year and takes over dozens of venues in Denpasar City.

The Bali Arts Festival is most famous for its opening parade, which features thousands of dancers and cultural performers from all over the province and Indonesia.

The Bali Arts Festival celebrates Balinese art, music, dance, and literature. The epicenter of the event is the Taman Werdhi Budaya Art Centre, also known as the Bali Art Center, located in the heart of Denpasar City.
