The incident occurred as a group of 20 locals from East Nusa (NTT) were gathered in a boarding house located on Jalan Batas Dukuh Sari Gang, South Denpasar to celebrate the new year.

Upon receiving a report from nearby residents, officials from Community Protection (Linmas) arrived to warn and disperse the crowd.
