Contractors Conduct Final Checks On Upgrades To Kuta, Legian, And Seminyak Beaches In Bali

Contractors responsible for the upgrades and redevelopments at Samigita Beach have announced that the work is now complete. Speaking to reporters, officials from the Public Works Office have shared that the final checklist is now underway, with equipment and scaffolding to be removed in due course. Samigita Beach is the local name for the stretch of coastline that runs from Kuta Beach, through Legian, down to Seminyak Beach in Bali.

The Head of the Badung Public Works and Spatial Planning Service, Ida Bagus Surya Suamba, told reporters, “[we have reached] the deadline, the work has reached 100 percent. However, to ensure whether it is in accordance with the plan, we are currently conducting a checklist, which totals 1,262 jobs with a project span of 6.51 kilometers”. He confirmed that the project will only be completely signed off when all parties are happy that the work has been completed to the high standard that was agreed on at the beginning of the project.

For this reason, Suamba said that scaffolding and other equipment will remain in place in case issues are flagged during the final assessment. He explained, “This is to ensure the quality of work according to the best. So, if there is a repair, the partner can immediately fix it, and there is no need to install scaffolding again.”

He continued to explain that the project would not be handed over to the Badung Public Works and Spatial Planning Service for a further two years. “The contractor is responsible for the next two years in the maintenance period. After the two-year maintenance period is complete, the upgrades facilities, including the tsunami shelters, Kuta Art Market building, merchant stalls, and the outdoor gym and skatepark, will be transferred into the ownership of their respective traditional villages; be that Kuta, Legian or Seminyak. This has already been agreed to by the Regent of Badung I Nyoman Giri Prasta.

The regeneration projects may have only just been completed, but the leader from Seminyak Traditional Village has already proposed several follow-up projects. Speaking to local reporters last week, the Head of the Seminyak Beach Area Arrangement Team, I Komang Ruditha Hartawan, explained that proposals for follow-up projects have already been submitted.

He noted, “There really isn’t any new addition. We have actually submitted this proposal the previous year. But maybe because there are budget adjustments and limited time, some of the proposals cannot be executed in 2022.”

Leaders from Seminyak Traditional Village have submitted proposals for further renovations to the sidewalk at Seminyak Beach. They have also requested planning permission to install picnic tables and benches, as well as massage beds along Seminyak Beach. When questioned about the follow-up proposals, Suamba confirmed to reporters that the requests had been received but that the provincial budget for this period was not yet available.

The upgrades to Samigita Beach can be seen along the length of the coastline. Kuta Beach received significant upgrades, including a skatepark, playground, and outdoor gym. All this effort has been made as a move to bring tourism back to the Kuta area. Local leaders have voiced their concerns that there has been a steady shift in focus to the west of Kuta, towards areas like Canggu. Though Kuta remains one of the most popular areas of Bali for holidaymakers, travelers have cited security concerns among their reasons for looking to stay elsewhere on the island. In light of a recent violent attack in Kuta, local leaders have increased tourist police patrols of the area at nighttime.
