It may feel like the direst moment of the dry season in Bali right now, but with the rainy season just around the corner, leaders on the island are already preparing for huge downpours.
With record-breaking flooding in September 2025, communities across the province are bracing for more rain in 2026.

The Denpasar City Council (DPRD) has reminded the Denpasar City Government not to be complacent as the threat of the rainy season is imminent. Flood mitigation measures are being urged to be strengthened, especially in areas prone to flooding.
In September 2025, communities across Denpasar were devastated by the impact of the worst flooding the island had seen in more than 70 years. Although so far in September the rain has not come, with droughts hitting much of the province, the impact of the first rains could be huge.
It was not only Denpasar affected by heavy rains last year, but much of Bali Province as a whole, including the top tourism destinations of Badung Regency, like Canggu, Uluwatu, Seminyak and Kuta.
Speaking to reporters, the Chairman of the PDI Perjuangan Faction of the Denpasar DPRD, I Ketut Suteja Kumara, said that the BPBD, together with the PUPR Service, must prepare concrete steps to anticipate major flooding.
He shared, “To anticipate flooding and waterlogging in areas prone to flooding during the upcoming rainy season, the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) and the Public Works and Housing Agency (PUPR) should prepare anticipatory and disaster mitigation measures.”
He noted that mitigation efforts alone are not sufficient when flooding occurs. Drainage channel cleaning and river flow normalization must be carried out before rainfall intensity increases. Early warning systems, response posts, and disaster preparedness teams must also be ensured.
Local politician, the Head of the PSI-NasDem Faction of the Denpasar DPRD, Agus Wirajaya, also has publicly asked all relevant regional officials to clean the drainage, especially in areas frequently hit by flooding.
He commended the Denpasar City Government’s tree pruning efforts and requested that further action be taken against trees that could potentially endanger road users. One of the most common secondary disasters after a major flood is falling trees and landslides.
Responding to the calls, Denpasar Mayor IGN Jaya Negara stated that flood mitigation is a serious concern for the Denpasar City Government. He added that the city government is collaborating with the BWS because several river authorities fall under the central government.
He shared, “We also always carry out the flushing required by the Public Works Department, and now we are collaborating with the BWS to normalize the river.”

Bali, Indonesia, and regions around the world have been warned by the United Nations to prepare for a ‘devastating’ El Niño in 2026/7.
The UN is calling on countries to prepare for an imminent return to El Niño, which intensifies weather extremes, especially drier conditions, across Central America, northern regions of South America, the Caribbean, Australia, Indonesia, and parts of South Asia.

Tourists in Bali can stay up to date with the latest weather warnings with us here at The Bali Sun. It is also advisable to follow the Bali Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency on Instagram, where extreme weather warnings and daily tourist weather forecasts are published in English and Bahasa Indonesia.

It is highly advisable for those travelling to Bali in the next 5 months to prepare two itineraries, one which is Plan A and Plan B, which can be put into effect in the case of bad weather. The rainy season in Bali is typically manageable, but the season is becoming more extreme each year.
Once upon a time, there would be intense periods of rainfall, followed by sunshine. Nowadays, during the rainy season, storms are longer and more intense, with less time between downpours. Rapid urban development across the island has also increased flood risks, due to the conversion of agricultural and greenbelt land.

The once effective subak and canal system has been compromised by greed allowing huge rice fields being concreted over. When you see roads flooded in the overbuilt tourist zones you just know it is a self inflicted problem.
I prefer rainy season. Obviously stay in an area with zero risk for flooding due to surrounding rice fields easily absorbing whatever volume of water.

If you own or lease or retired my suggestion is move to non probmatic areas with higher rainfall or build massive concrete tanks not the normal plastic for rain water and you will have metered reliable village water as well get away from the circuses ...beats me why people want live where all the problems happen. And if you get private water they are well known for Mafia type practices to screw more money. Buy a place or rent one with a bore or drill for one , stuff living near other westerners

@WAYAN BO, climate control ,global warming , covid , El Nino and all the normal stupidity reasons for raining in rainy season every excuse in the books for flooding in bali while some areas have been fixed its impossible to fix many areas because of systematic uncontrolled building out of stormwater run offs and natural rain water runoffs. It's been raining in rainy season for centuries but the greed the stupidity the building of every square inch has not. Now wait for it to start raining and wait for the gush and floodgates to burst of stupid false reporting on rainy season in rainy season everything will be blamed once again and the rubbish will start again flowing from all over bali dry creek beds to the great holiday areas and famed south bali beaches while scooping up world awards Titles and accolades for best in the world. And wait for the complainers on Facebook complaining about holidaying in bali rainy season where it rains.i love it it fills my massive concrete rain water tanks for 8 months and I'm on the hill in buleleng massive sea views no flooding in thought it out, just sit with my view and bintangs and think how lucky we are in the best time of the year rainy season in rainy season and watch the circus begin again down south

Yes there will be big talk again about raining in rainy season go figure, And the flooding brought on by greed and continuous building out so no flood water run off is possible, and bumi ayu will flood again. They will call it natural disasters and probly covid again but will not address the real source of the problem as stated above. And many will complain about going on holiday in bali during rainy season and they cant do much when in rainy season its rainy season how extraordinary
