Looking at travel trends there are four distinct areas that we predict are going to be the next big travel destinations in Bali.
Some of these destinations may already be on your Bali bucket list, or they may be entirely new. In the first of this two part series, we will explore how travel trends are pointing Bali lovers towards the emerging destinations of Medewi, Munduk, Seseh and Sideman.
In part one, we will be diving into all things Munduk and Seseh…are you ready?
Munduk
Munduk, a small mountain village nestled amidst lush greenery, offers a breath of fresh air (literally!). This haven boasts breathtaking landscapes, a cool and refreshing climate, and a glimpse into the serenity of traditional Balinese rural life. Here, amidst the whispers of nature and the warmth of Balinese hospitality, unfolds an experience unlike any other in Bali.
Untouched Beauty: A feast for the senses
Munduk’s charm lies in its breathtaking natural splendor. Imagine verdant rice paddies cascading down emerald slopes, painting a picture of pure tranquility.
Majestic waterfalls like Munduk Waterfall and Banyumala Twin Waterfall plunge into crystal-clear pools, creating a symphony of sound and sight. And as if that wasn’t enough, panoramic vistas of dense tropical jungle and serene lakes like Lake Tamblingan complete the postcard-perfect scene.
A Tranquil Embrace: A world away from the crowds
Unlike the bustling beach resorts in the south, Munduk offers a sanctuary of peace and quiet. The absence of crowds translates into a serene atmosphere, perfect for those seeking to unwind, recharge, or simply reconnect with nature.
Imagine waking up to the gentle chirping of birds and the rustling of leaves, a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Inhale the crisp mountain air, free from pollution, and allow the tranquility to wash over you.
A Nature Lover’s Paradise: Adventure awaits
Munduk’s natural beauty beckons to be explored. Lace up your hiking boots and embark on a trek through verdant rice paddies and lush forests, where the only sounds are your footsteps and the whispers of the wind. Discover hidden waterfalls tucked away in the wilderness, their cascading waters inviting a refreshing dip.
Waterfalls: Cascading Jewels of Munduk
Munduk isn’t just home to one, but several waterfalls, each with its unique charm. The most popular is Munduk Waterfall,a cascading beauty easily accessible by a short hike. The cool spray and the plunge pool at its base offer a welcome respite after a trek.
For those seeking a more adventurous pursuit, the Banyumala Twin Waterfall awaits. Reaching it requires a slightly more challenging hike, but the reward is twofold – two cascading waterfalls nestled amidst lush greenery, creating a picture-perfect scene.
Explore the hidden gems like Labuhan Kebo Waterfall, known for its secluded location and serene atmosphere, or Red Coral Waterfall, a cascading wonder surrounded by vibrant flora.
For the truly intrepid, venturing further afield unveils hidden treasures like Wanagiri Pucak Manik Waterfall, a series of three waterfalls offering a secluded paradise.
Aromatic Escape: A cup of paradise
Munduk is renowned for its sprawling coffee plantations, where the air itself is infused with the rich aroma of freshly roasted beans.
Take a coffee tour and embark on a journey from bean to cup. Learn about the traditional coffee-making process, passed down through generations, and witness the dedication that goes into creating each perfect cup.
Finally, indulge in a cup of freshly brewed Balinese coffee, savoring its unique flavor amidst the picturesque surroundings of the plantation.
Planning Your Munduk Escape
While Munduk offers a tranquil escape, there are a few things to consider when planning your trip. Nestled in the northern part of Bali, it’s a bit further from the airport compared to the southern tourist hubs. Factor in travel time when planning your itinerary.
Accommodation options cater to a variety of budgets and preferences. Luxurious eco-villas with breathtaking views offer a touch of indulgence, while budget-friendly guesthouses provide a cozy and authentic experience. Choose the one that best suits your style and allows you to fully immerse yourself in the Munduk experience.

Seseh
Seseh is Bali’s rising star, a new frontier in tourism development located on the southwest coast of the island. While not yet a fully fledged resort area, it’s on the cusp of a transformation, with whispers of luxury developments and a surge in interest.
Untapped Beauty: Pristine Beaches and Natural Charm
Seseh’s main attraction is its pristine black sand beach. Unlike the white sand beaches of southern Bali, Seseh offers a unique volcanic landscape, perfect for long walks and enjoying the raw beauty of the coast. The area boasts a rough and rugged coastline, waiting to be explored by adventurous travelers.
Surfer’s Paradise: Catching Perfect Waves
Seseh is a haven for surfers, particularly those seeking a challenge. The consistent waves here are ideal for experienced surfers, offering a thrilling ride on the Indian Ocean. Surf schools and camps are expected to rise alongside the development, catering to surfers of all levels. Wild, challenging and no hustle in the lineup – it’s a good spot to be!
Tranquility with a Hint of Luxury
Seseh offers a comparatively peaceful escape compared to the bustling tourist hub of Canggu. Here, you can enjoy the serenity of the beach without the crowds, ideal for those seeking relaxation and rejuvenation.
However, with the upcoming luxury developments, the tranquility might transform into a more upscale ambience. Seseh is where the old timers of the Canggu expat have started to migrate towards as the resort continues to boom.
To find the Seseh Tribe be sure to grab an early morning coffee at FLOWERBOY with the run club or a chilled breakfast at Seseh General Store.
On the Horizon: Development and Potential Concerns
The biggest change coming to Seseh is the planned construction of luxury resorts and residences. The most notable project is the Anantara Dragon Seseh Bali Resort, a high-end development promising stunning architecture and world-class amenities. While this signifies a potential boom in tourism, it has also sparked concerns.
Balancing Development and Preservation: Striking a Chord
The local community and environmentalists have raised concerns about the potential negative impacts of large-scale development.
They worry about the preservation of Seseh’s natural beauty and the impact on the local culture. Negotiations between developers and the community are ongoing, with a focus on sustainable practices and responsible tourism.
The Future of Seseh: A Destination to Watch
Seseh is at a crossroads. With careful planning and responsible development, it has the potential to become a luxurious yet sustainable tourist destination.
Whether it retains its tranquil charm or transforms into a high-end resort area remains to be seen. One thing’s for sure – Seseh is a name to remember in the ever-evolving tourism landscape of Bali.

Dont think that you can pop into Munduk Moding Plantation for a lunch or coffee. It will cost you $50/per for a set lunch and a coffee. A pity... we used to call in often but they dont want our money.
