Bali’s Neighbouring Island Offers 24/7 Parties For Fun Loving Tourists

Share The Article

Bali is home to some of Southeast Asia’s biggest and best parties. There is a reason why the island has been a haven for young party-loving backpackers for the last 40 years.

For those looking to experience the most authentic backpacker parties, Bali is no longer the place to be.

With beach clubs and luxury nightlife venues throughout the island’s most significant resort areas, those looking to party like it’s their first summer of freedom must hop on a fast boat to Gili Trawangan.

Almost everyone who visits refers to Gili T simply as Gili T. Gili Trawangan is one of three small islands located off the coast of Lombok.

Technically located within North Lombok Regency, Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air are often seen by tourists as extensions of Bali.

Known for its crystal clear waters, palm tree-lined beaches, and laid-back atmosphere, Gili Trawangan has been a haven for young backpackers and world travelers for decades. The island is only 340 hectares and can be walked around in just under 2 hours…longer if you’re stopping to spot turtles from the shoreline or enjoy a beer or two along the way.

One local bartender told reporters, “In Gili Trawangan, parties are not weekend events. Here, the party is a daily agenda, only excluded on Friday night, when the music has to stop at midnight.” Every other night of the week, music can be heard pumping from the island’s beach bars and pubs until 3 am and beyond.

The party scene in Gili Trawangan is informal, which is part of its appeal to international tourists and those who work behind the bar. The bartender shared, “We work here every night. Sometimes, we drink with guests so that they are comfortable. Sometimes, it’s just to accompany and chat.”

The party scene’s friendly, welcoming, and authentic nature is captivating for young travelers seeking freedom, new experiences, and new horizons.

With Bali offering its chic, polished, and luxurious nightclubs and world-class beach clubs, the grassroots nature of the bars and beachfront hangouts of Gili Trawangan feels like stepping back in time into the golden era of backpacking adventures.

What makes Gili Trawangan so appealing to young party-loving tourists is its affordability.

With hostels, day trips, and nights out on offer at shoestring budget prices, tourists can stay longer and party harder in Gili Trawangan than in other destinations around Southeast Asia.

Although remote, Gili Trawangan is still easy to access, with fast boats leaving Sanur Harbour and Padangbai Harbor in Bali multiple times a day.

Though the fun doesn’t ever stop in Gili Trawangan, tourists must be aware of some of the potential risks of partying in Southeast Asia.

Following a mass methanol poisoning event in Laos in 2024, the Australian Government travel advice bureau, Smarttraveller, launched an awareness campaign in March this year to help educate young backpackers about the risks of drinking alcohol abroad.

Speaking to the media at the launch of the awareness campaign, the Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Penny Wong, shared, “We want our children to be curious and explore the world – but above all else, we want them to be safe.”

As part of the methanol poisoning awareness campaign Smarttravler advises “As little as one shot of methanol can be fatal. Labels on bottles aren’t always accurate. Be suspicious of unusually cheap drinks claiming to use branded spirits, they may be counterfeit.” Reports of methanol poisoning have been reported annual in both Bali and the Gili Islands, and tourists must be aware of the risks before making the choice to drink.

Smarttraveller adds, “The symptoms of methanol poisoning can vary. If you or a friend have symptoms or just don’t feel right, get medical help immediately. Urgent medical care could save your life.”

Great! Let's pollute the other islands as well as Bali. Will there be NO unspoiled island left in the Indonesian archipelago?

I have visited Gili Trawangan a couple of times. Not going back. These tiny islands should have been left in their natural state as they do not have natural resources to sustain humans living there and tourism.
