Bali’s Mount Agung Will Be Closed For Tourist Treks Until May 2025

Bali’s Mount Agung will be closed for to the public until 3rd May 2025. The hiking routes on the sacred Mount Agung are periodically closed to the public, including for tourist treks, for religious ceremonies and rituals.

Mount Agung will be closed to the public for a period of 27 days. The closure started on 6th April and will run until 3rd May 2025.

The closure of Mount Agung is due to the ceremonies for Ida Bhatara Turun Kabeh at Pura Agung Besakih, also known as the Mother Temple.

The ceremonies at Pura Agung Besakih will commence on the upcoming full moon, on the 12th of April, though Mount Agung has been given closure notices ahead of time.

Speaking to reporters the Head of the Besakih Traditional Village, Jro Mangku Widiartha, confirmed that the closure applies to all hiking and access routes onto Mount Agung.

Due to the Ida Bhatara Turun Kabeh ceremonies at at Pura Agung Besakih, the whole of the surrounding landscape has been purified and is now deemed by Balinese Hindus as being ready to welcome the energies of Ida Bhatara to each temple within Pura Agung Besakih. 

Ida Bhatara Turun Kabeh is a deeply important Balinese Hindu ceremony that is conducted every April-May in the province. Ida Bhatara Turun Kabeh literally translates from Balinese to mean ‘All the Gods Descend’ and since Mount Agung is considered in Balinese Hinduism as the home of the gods, the landscape must be kept clear for their arrival.

Widiartha told reporters “We are closing this climbing activity to minimize things that we do not want during the work, so we have decided to temporarily close the climbing routes to Mount Agung.”

This closure has been formally written into legislation, as part of the Bali Governor’s Circular Letter Number 08 of 2025, meaning that it will now be a criminal offence within Balinese provincial law, to step foot on Mount Agung between now and 3rd May 2025.

Widiartha noted, “The peak of the work will take place on the 12th of April 2025 but the series of ceremonies started several days ago and will end on 3rd May 2025.”

Widiartha shared his hopes that the public and tourists would respect the ceremonial processes and honor the closure of the sacred volcano without any disruptions to the Ida Bhatara Turun Kabeh ceremonies.

Widiartha confirmed that he and his teams have issued updated guidance to tour guides and travel agencies across Bali, that everyone is up to date with the temporary closures, and that no treks or tours of Mount Agung should be offered or sold at this time.

Over the course of the next month, thousands of Balinese Hindus from all across the island will make their pilgrimages to Pura Agung Beskaih to take part in ceremonies for Ida Bhatara Turun Kabeh. 

Pura Agung Beskaih will remain open to the public, however, due to the volume of worshippers visiting the temple, and the huge number of ceremonies happening morning, noon, and night, it is best to check with a local tour guide on the day of a visit to check which areas of the temple complex will be open to visitors and which will not.

It is mandatory for all visitors to all temples, but especially Pura Agung Beskaih to honor temple rules. This includes wearing a sarong and sash, and a modest top, as well as respecting when and where it is and is not acceptable to take photographs. Visitors who are menstruating are forbidden to enter temples in Bali. 

While Mount Agung will be closed until 3rd May 2025, Mount Batur remains open for all tourist activities. Trekking to the summit of Mount Batur is one of the most popular Bali bucket-list activities.

Tourists can complete the trek on foot, or book a sunrise jeep tour for a more laid-back experience. According to Bali Provincial Law, all tourists must be accompanied by a registered guide when stepping foot on Mount Batur, and once open again, Mount Agung too.
