Bali’s Kuta Beach is indisputably one of the most famous destinations in all of Southeast Asia. As one of the region’s oldest and most established travel hotspots, it is fair to say that in recent years it has started to show signs of its age.
Over the last 12 months, extensive efforts have been made to level up this iconic resort to welcome a new generation of holidaymakers.

From infrastructure to the overall organisation and extensive conservation efforts, Kuta Beach has an increasingly fresh feel to it. One of the most noticeable improvements comes from the way that beach vendors are organised.
For years, the beach vendor set-up was kind of a free-for-all; it was chaotic, but it worked and in many ways was part of the charm of the destination. It reached a tipping point, however, and tourists had started to note how they often felt hassled by beach vendors, and many local leaders acknowledged that the array of informal business set-ups, in terms of beach shacks and stalls, started to look unslightly. So, improvements have been made.
Earlier this year, all beach vendors who operated from fixed stalls were moved into a custom-built pergola that had stalls for entrepreneurs selling cold drinks, snacks, souvenirs, and massages.
In doing so, the team at Kuta Beach also implemented a new registration system requiring all beach vendors to formally register their businesses, wear an official ID, and a uniform. New umbrellas were also issued to vendors across the beachfront to complete the tidy, uniform feel.
The process has been going well, and the Head of Kuta Traditional Village, Komang Alit Ardana, has shared an update with reporters.
He shared, “From the initial 1,500 vendors, we have now organized and recorded 800. We believe this is an achievement worthy of appreciation.” He confirmed that the redevelopment work has been carried out all along the Kuta coastline, over approximately 4.5 kilometers long, from Sekeh Beach through to Kuta Beach.
Of the 800 vendors, approximately 400 operate in the main Kuta Beach area. Ardana confirmed that there are more vendors at Kuta Beach because it is larger and attracts more tourists than at Jerman Beach and Sekeh Beach.
He noted, “It’s not that vendors are only found on Kuta Beach; there are also vendors on Jerman Beach and Sekeh Beach. But the most visible and crowded ones are in Kuta.”
Leveling Up Kuta
He confirmed that the business development work is also starting to have an impact. Ardana shared, “The cafes are already operating and paying rent. This is also part of the reorganization to prevent clutter and to attract tourists.”
He was quick to note that all this restructuring is not aimed at making life more difficult for those small businesses and sole traders operating in the area, but to bring efficiency, transparency, and sustainable growth in the long term.

Ardana shared, “We don’t want to cut into the community’s food supply. This restructuring is actually intended to create greater order and sustainability.”
He acknowledged that there is still a long way to go in terms of improvement at Kuta Beach, but that he and his teams are committed to making it happen.
He concluded, “We hope that after all this development is complete, Kuta Beach will truly be a comfortable, orderly area that will continue to support the local economy in a sustainable manner.”

One of the most notable improvement works happening in Kuta right now is the construction of essential coastal breakwaters to protect the iconic beachfront from erosion.
Four of the five breakwaters are now complete, with teams waiting on tidal fluctuations to settle before completing breakwater five by the end of April 2026.
Tourists visiting the area may see or hear construction work, but every effort is being made to minimise disruptions for visitors.
