Bali’s Black Sand Beaches Are The Gateway For Tourists Into Unexplored Natural Wonders

Share The Article

Did you know that Bali is home to some of the most stunning black sand beaches in the world? Providing quite the contrast to the vast expanses of white sandy bliss so many tourists seek, Bali’s black sand beaches are absolutely not to be missed.

Kusamba Salt Farmer in East Bali Black Sand Beach

Here at The Bali Sun, we love the huge amount of diversity that Bali offers as a tourism destination. From jungles to coastlines, from volcano peaks to rolling rice paddies and farmland, there is a new landscape to be discovered every day of a vacation in Bali.

The island’s black sand beaches are truly off-the-beaten-path bucket list destinations. These stunning beaches can be found in Karangasem, Buleleng, and Jembrana Regency. The black sand beaches of Karangasem Regency in East Bali are particularly beautiful and offer tourists the chance to visit and connect with this deeply sacred part of the island.

Located under the gaze of Bali’s Mount Agung, the black sand beaches of Amed are genuinely unmissable.

Tourists visiting this part of Bali and who are interested in learning more about Balinese culture should book a tour of a local salt farm. This region of Bali is famous for salt farming, and even in 2026, local salt farmers are still using traditional techniques to harvest sea salt from these shores.

The best spot to meet local salt farmers is, in fact, around Kusamba Beach. This is why tourists will often see Kusamba Salt listed on menu items or for sale in souvenir shops. But by visiting Kusamba personally, tourists can purchase straight from the source.

Heading in a totally different direction, to the very northern tip of Bali, is Lovina Beach. This beautiful black sand beach is a seriously underrated vacation destination. Not only is Lovina Beach a stunning beach retreat, but it also offers tourists easy access to all of North Bali’s top tourism attractions, including the waterfalls of Munduk.

Unlike down in the south, where sunsets are the best view of the day, up in Lovina, it is the sunrises that are worth waking early for. Whether watching the sunrise from the beachfront or the comfort of an oceanview room in one of Lovina’s top hotels, the sunrises over Lovina’s black sand beaches are something to write home about.

Lovina is also famous for being home to a resident pod of spinner dolphins. It is possible to arrange a sunrise dolphin watching tour from Lovina, and it is as dreamy as it sounds. However, tourists are advised to do their research and find a reputable and respectful tour boat company that obeys the rules in place to protect the wild dolphins and not stress them out.

For those who love the underwater realms and who want to visit one of Bali’s top black sand beaches, then look no further than Pemuteran. This black sand stretch of coastline flows out into one of Bali’s best preserved coral reefs. Extensive efforts have been made over the last decade off the coast of Pemuteran to help conserve and revive the coral reef here, and the hard work is paying off.

In 2026, Pemuteran is slowly starting to appear on more travel itineraries for holidaymakers in Bali.

The coastal community has won the UN World Tourism Organisation Tourism Village of the Year Award, and over the coming years, more promotion will take place to ensure that more tourists understand what this outstanding community is offering.

Speaking to reporters following the win in late 2025, through Head of the Bueleng Tourism Office, Gede Dody Sukma Oktiva Askara, praised Pemuteran Village for the huge amount of hard work that went into winning the award.

The application process is intensive, and the level of accountability work now on their hands is huge. It’s all worth it, though, since the award is nothing shy of life-changing for this community and their tourism projects.
