Bali’s Penglipuran Village is anticipating a huge surge in the number of visitors over the next week.
This is due to the Lunar New Year festival and because this award-winning tourism village is one of the most engaging cultural attractions in the province.
Penglipuran Village in Bangli Regency is anticipating to welcome 10,000 tourists a day over the Chinese New Year holidays.
The General Manager of Penglipuran Village, Wayan Sumiarsa, told reporters, “If we compare it from the data we have in 2024, in February before Chinese New Year, the number of visits at that time was around 8,000 [per day]. But ahead of the Chinese New Year this year, there was already an increase compared to last year, around 10,000.”
Visits to Penglipuran Village have been spring with domestic tourists. The village is considered to be an important landmark both for Balinese culture and Indonesian culture more broadly.
As a heritage and perfectly preserved village, Penglipuran Village is one of the last remaining fully pedestrianized villages in Bali, surrounded by protected bamboo forests, agricultural land, and home to traditional family compounds.
Sumiarsa confirmed that he and his teams will be offering new events and activities for visitors over the Lunar New Year, in addition to weekly events like the Pelipur lara market, a unique community marketplace that promotes sustainability and functions using bamboo as currency.
Over the next week, Penglipuran Village will lay on more barong landing performances, curated and performed by the young people of the community. The barong is the traditional Balinese mythological panther-like creature.
He is known as the king of the spirits, the leader of all things good, and the arch-enemy of the demon queen Rangda. The barong dance tells the tale of the battle between Barong and Rangda, which is the battle of good over evil.
The barong also draws upon mythologies that align with many traditional folklore stories of Chinese culture, which is why the dance was chosen to celebrate the Chinese New Year.
More domestic tourists than international visitors typically visit Penglipuran Village, and foreign tourists who skip a visit to the community are often considered to be missing out. While Penglipuran Village attracts thousands of people every day, there are ways that visitors can skip the crowds.
It is advisable to get to the ticket office at the opening time so as to enter the village before the tourist buses arrive mid-morning. Visiting later in the afternoon is also a good time to explore the village and the bamboo forest, especially since the heat of the day will have passed.
For tourists seeking a more intimate and totally crowd-free experience at Penglipruan Village then arranging an overnight stay at one of the community homestays or guesthouses is highly recommended. Penglipuran Village Tourism also offers memorable and unique experiences for overnight guests, including dining under the stars during a set meal hosted on the main village street.
Over the Chinese New Year festival, all traders and hosts at Penglipruan Village will be dressed in traditional Balinese attire, and as always, sarongs, kabaya, and udeng will be available for tourists to rent or buy. Many tourists choose to don traditional Balinese clothing during their visit to add a layer of cultural immersion and historical authenticity to their trip.
Many tourists visiting Penglipuran Village stop by as part of a half-day tour. To complete a full-day tour, there are a number of wonders that Bangli Regency has to offer.
Bangli Regency is home to some of Bali’s most magical waterfalls, including Krisik Waterfall, Goa Giri Campuhan Waterfall, Yeh Bulan Waterfall, and Goa Raja Waterfall.
Bangli Regency is, of course, home to Kintamani, the home of Mount Batur, Lake Batur, and Bali’s finest coffee plantations. For those who don’t fancy chasing waterfalls, coupling a tour of Penglipuran Village with a wander around Kintamani makes for a memorable Bali day trip.
