Communication Manager of PLN for Bali province, I Made Arya said that the plan to shut down the electricity in Nusa Penida was based on a request from officials in Nusa Penida island in order to respect the Hindu community in that area.

Although electricity in the mainland will continue operating, the government still instructed all residents to avoid exposing lights from their homes outdoors, to prevent creating a distraction to people who meditate during the celebration.

“Officials from Nusa Penida requested us to shut down the electrical power to the entire island as we usually do every year during the Nyepi Day celebration,” said Arya on Friday (12/3).

He also predicted that the electricity consumption during the celebration on Sunday will decrease by 30 to 40 %. “I predicted that the maximum electricity consumption on Sunday will be 520 MW, while normally it could reach up to 980 MW” Arya added.

Additionally, he explained that PLN will apply a different method on the holiday, “We will not deploy our units to the location if any minor problems occur unless it’s an emergency situation,” Arya concluded.

Meanwhile, the provincial government instructed all regional governments to shut down public road lights starting from Saturday at 10:00 pm.
