There is no better place in the world to sip on cocktails while watching the sunset than in Bali.
The Island of the Gods is home to some of the most prestigious bars and lounges in Asia, and mixologists on the islands are hustling hard to refine the limits of what is possible behind the bar.
Indonesia is currently hosting the H-Day Mixology Competition 2023. The event will be hosted in four stages across different cities in Indonesia. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the leading mixologists in the competition so far hail from Bali.
The first leg of the competition was held at W-Atlas Super Club in Canggu and featured mixologists from the island’s leading nightlife venues, including Savaya, The Social Seminyak, and The Shady Fox.
The next stages of the competition will be held at Velvet Club Surabaya on 19th June; then mixologists will head to the Gold Dragon in Semarang on 21st June and continue in Bandung City on 17th July, with the last stage round of the competition taking place on the 20th July in Jakarta.
The jury is still out as to whether the finals, touted as the Best of the Best event, will be held in Bali or in Jakarta in September.
Not so secretly, there are hopes that the final will be held in Bali, as it will serve as a great boost for the venues involved in the competition and be much celebrated by locals and tourists alike.
The Chairman of the competition, Bayu Hendra, told reporters “Hopefully with the frequent occurrence of these events the next generation [will] want to become a professional bartender. Because from the hospitality side, the skills they have must also be balanced with their attitude. A bartender must also have manners.”

The organizers of the event want to see Indonesian bartenders take to the world stage and put the country on the map as a world-class destination for luxury hospitality and mixology.
For those who want to sample cocktail creations from some of Indonesia’s most pioneering mixologists, you don’t have to look too hard.
Just take a glimpse at the cocktail menus designed by the H-Day Mixology Competition 2023 winners for the Bali round.
Dimas Rio Gaku from The Social Seminyak won first place. The Social is one of Seminyak’s most loved late-night haunts. The cocktail menu is a real treat. Highly recommended is the Yellow Mellow; a dreamy drink incorporating basil-infused gin, Bianco vermouth, apple, lemon, carrot yuzu, and a honey air bubble.
The second place at the Bali leg of the mixology competition went to I Gusti Ngurah Gde Jimmy from Savaya Bali.
Easily the most iconic club in Bali, the clifftop luxury lifestyle venue Savaya offers guests a night to remember. Sipping a cocktail from the swim-up bar at Savaya should be high on any Bali Bucket List.
In third place came I Putu Aris Septiawan from The Shady Fox. The guest list-only speakeasy is a clandestine cocktail parlor in Pererenan, Canggu.
The ultra-classy cocktails make a late-night dash to The Shady Fox an absolute must for wide-eyed night owls.
The Shogi Ice Tea comes highly recommended; move aside the espresso martini! The Shady Fox’s Shogi Ice Tea is a matcha distill, a healthy dose of Bombay Sapphire gin, distilled citrus, and matcha foam.
Mixology and the best of Indonesian spirits will also feature prominently at the upcoming Ubud Food Festival. The full program of events and workshops has just been announced, and this year’s festival is set to be a big one!
For connoisseurs of cocktails, be sure to secure your place at Bali’s Rising Mixiologust event. Featuring Putu Ari Septiawan from Shady Fox, Sancaya Dwi from Black Project, Esytriana from Night Rooster, and Apéritif’s Eric Nani and Juniasa.
The drinks are set to be popping with plenty of bar flair to match. The event will be held at Apéritif Restaurant & Bar on Friday 30th, June from 5.30-10.30pm.
Ubud Food Festival returns to Bali’s arts and cultural capital from 30th June to 2nd July. DO NOT DRINK COCKTAILS IN BALI!!!
Only drink closed bottled drinks that you can see opened.
You will get heavily spiked drinks made with local Arak that can and does make you blind, leave you severely poisoned and possibly die as a result.
This is no joke, too many stories to count.
All the other drinks are cheap enough, no need to drink literal poison.
