Officials in Denpasar have deported a Malaysian man who has served 10 years in Bali’s notorious Kerobokan Prison. The man named only by his initials HKS, is now 49 years old. He is originally from Selangor in Malaysia. HKS has been sent back to Malaysia and blacklisted from Indonesia meaning he is never allowed to do so as any attempts may result in further criminal charges.
HKS served 10 years of a 13-year sentence. He was arrested by officers from the Indonesian Customs Service upon his arrival at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport on March 19, 2012. He had just landed from Bangkok using Free Visit Visa (BVK) on an AirAsia flight. He was arrested in possession of methamphetamine.
At the time of his arrest and interrogation, HKS admitted that he had been working in construction in Kuala Lumpur, a famously dangerous and underpaid industry. While working at the building site HKS claims to have been approached by someone who said that he could pay him USD 100 a day. He was told that in order to take the job in Indonesia, he must first go to Thailand. It is in Thailand where he collected the drugs before bringing them into Indonesia.
HKS was found guilty of drug offenses during his court hearing on 6th August 2012. He was sentenced to 13 years in prison and a fine of IDR 10 billion. He has served 10 years of his 13-year sentence, although it has not been made public why he was allowed out early.
After being let out of our prison in late July, HKS spent a further 15-days in Bali’s Immigration Detention Centre while Immigration officers arranged the final paperwork for his deportation. Since his passport expired during his time in prison, he was permitted to travel with temporary documents issued by the Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta.
The Head of the Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights Bali Anggiat Napitupulu, confirmed to local reporters that HKS had been released from prison and deported. He said that ‘”Based on Article 99 Juncto 102 Paragraph (3) of Law No. 6 of 2011 concerning Immigration, foreigners who are considered to be able to disrupt public security and order, Immigration Officers can impose lifelong deterrence’.
HKS was accompanied through Bali Airport by two immigration officers, right until he boarded his flight. He flew on Malindo Air flight OD305 from Denpasar to Kuala Lumpur on Saturday 6th August.
The fate of HKS when he arrives in Kuala Lumpur is unknown, he may find it hard to adjust back to life in Malaysia after spending a decade in one of the world’s most notorious prisons. HKS served his sentence out at Kerobokan Prison in Bali, also known as KBB.
The prison was built to house just 320 inmates and as of 2017 was said to be housing over 1400 inmates. The prison has been home to some of Bali’s most famous criminals, including the Bali Nine and the Bali Bombers, the prison is reserved for the most serious offenders including drug criminals, murderers, and terrorists.
Bali Immigration has been deporting people on a regular basis over the last few months. Both people who have served their prison sentences and tourists who have overstayed their visas. Last week Bali Immigration deported two sisters from Morocco who had overstayed their visitor visa on arrival by 866-days.
The pair arrived in Bali on the 27th of November 2019 and were obliged to leave on or before the 26th of December 2019. The sisters claim that their flights were canceled due to Covid-19 and that this is why they overstayed by such a degree.

Anyway, it’s irrational thinking, it would be much more rational to deport immediately such foreigners out of country with prohibition to enter Indonesia in soon future again.
