Dozens of Women Surfing Kuta Beach While Wearing Traditional Balinese Clothing

Dozens of both expat and local women were partaking in a surf event called ‘Kartini Go Surf’ on Kuta Beach on Friday morning (16/4).

This event was initiated as a tribute to Raden Ajeng Kartini, an Indonesian woman who contributed to fighting for gender equality in Indonesian history before celebrating the Kartini Day on Wednesday (21/4). The event that was held in front of the Wyndham Hotel on Kuta Beach and was quite different from the common surfing events as all the participants were wearing Balinese traditional outfits (Kebaya’s) while surfing the waves.

The Head of the ‘Kartini Go Surf’ Committee, Anak Agung Ayu Ngurah Tini Rusmini Gorda (Gung Tini) said that 35 women from different nationalities participated in the event that started at 10:00am on Friday morning. “Other than the local women, there were also people from different countries such as the USA, Australia, South Korea, Japan, Brazil, Russia and Germany who have been staying in Bali during the Covid-19 pandemic.” Gung Tini said.Gung Tini explained that this event was also initiated to promote safe and healthy tourism during the pandemic as well as bring more Balinese culture to the international world as all the participants were required to wear traditional outfits.

“It was also a campaign to introduce our traditional outfits while teaching them that it’s possible to wear a Kebaya on a daily basis including during sports like surfing.” said the woman who is also serving as the Head of the Indonesian Kebaya Wearing Woman from Bali Province. Meanwhile Gung Tini is planning to hold another event called ‘Fishing With Kebaya’ that will take place on Les Village Beach in Tejakula, Buleleng in August 2021 as another educational approach in promoting Kebaya wearing in Bali.
