This is the time of year that Bali is battling with one of its biggest foes…Garbage.
Kuta beach is being bombarded with plastic trash washing up on its shores and volunteers are doing their best to help clean it up. Just as the beach looks back to its pristine condition, the very next tide brings in hundreds of pounds of new trash.
During the rainy season, ocean currents bring in the most amount of garbage making it a daily chore to get ready for the next batch of tourists ready to soak up the sun and swim in the ocean.
Bali officials also bring in heavy duty loaders to help clean up and push the hefty piles of trash. On December 18th alone, tourists helped clean Kuta beach of more than 3500 pounds of garbage.
Without the help of volunteers, vendors, restaurants and Bali officials, keeping up with the garbage problem would be impossible.
Every year, debates over whether the garbage originates from tourists, locals or even from another country ensues. The mix of garbage also contains plastic that has been worn down in the ocean suggesting it may not come from the island of Bali at all.
