Tourists in Bali have been issued with weather warnings from 22nd January until 24th January 2025, with possible extensions.
The Bali Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency has issued early warnings for high sea waves in many of Bali’s top tourism resorts.

Bali is in the middle of the rainy season. The 2025/6 rainy season has been one of the most devastating in recent history for Bali and for Indonesia nationally.
As a result, the Bali Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BBMKG) has been issuing early warnings and ensuring that the public has all the information they need to make safe decisions regarding their travel plans.
Heavy rains and extreme winds have been sweeping the island this week, with the worst of the damage recorded on Wednesday, 21st January.
The Bali Provincial Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) recorded more than 40 incidents, including landslides, collapsed houses, fallen trees, floods, and tornadoes across all nine regencies.
Damage was visible even in Bali’s most iconic beach resort. The famous Kuta Beach sign was destroyed by strong wings and the metal lettering could be seen crumpled at the selfie hotspot.
Speaking to reporters, the Head of the Bali Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Gede Agung Teja Bhusana Yadnya, stated that a joint cross-agency and cross-regional team had been directed to carry out an emergency response mission throughout the province.
The most devastating incident was recorded in Tabanan Regency, following a landslide that caused a house to collapse in Banjar Kuwum Ancak, Kuwum Village. Yadnya confirmed, “Initial information indicates one victim survived but suffered serious injuries, including a broken leg, while the other two victims are still being searched for.”
The Head of the BBMKG in Denpasar, Cahyo Nugroho, explained to reporters that Bali is in the peak of the rainy season, and this week’s weather conditions have been exacerbated by an active monsoon, which is accompanied by the formation of a wind convergence pattern in the Bali region alongside humid air reaching the upper atmosphere (200 mb).
He explained, “These conditions have led to increased convective activity and the potential for extreme weather events in the form of moderate to heavy rain and strong winds.”

Nugroho confirmed that forecasts show that moderate to heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds are likely in Badung Regency, Denpasar City, Tabanan, Jembrana, Bangli, Gianyar, Karangasem, Klungkung, and Buleleng in the coming days.
In the context of tourism, these regions include all of Bali’s most popular tourism resorts, including Canggu, Uluwatu, Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Sanur, Nusa Dua, and Ubud. Nugroho reiterated that these areas are at risk of hydrometeorological disasters such as flooding, flash floods, and landslides.

High sea waves reaching up to 4m in height have the potential to hit the Bali Straight, the Badung Strait, and the Lombok Strait. Tourists who are planning maritime tours, including surfing, snorkelling, and fast boat trips, are urged to double-check the forecast before heading out for the day.
This extreme weather has the potential to affect beachgoers and those visiting top coastal landmarks like Tanah Lot Temple. The team at Tanah Lot has confirmed that six lifeguards are now on duty at the cultural hotspot to ensure public safety.
Nugroho concluded, “Seeing this potential weather, we urge the public to remain vigilant and take anticipatory steps so that daily activities can continue safely and smoothly. Continue to monitor the latest information from the BMKG and do not easily trust weather information from unofficial sources.”

The Bali Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency has an Instagram account where up-to-date weather forecasts are shared on a daily basis, along with the shipping forecast, which covers conditions at sea, including wave heights. The BBMKG also shares weather warnings and disaster response updates on this page. While much of the content is shared in Bahasa Indonesia, a day tourism weather forecast is shared in English, and Instagram offers reliable auto-generated translations from Bahasa Indonesia to English.
