One of Bali’s most famous picture postcard landmarks is the rice terrace. These stunning green landscapes have become not only the most iconic in Bali, but also in all of Southeast Asia. From Vietnam to Indonesia, China to Sri Lanka, the simple green hues of rice paddies have captured the wanderlust of explorers worldwide. Visiting Bali’s rice terraces is an absolute must during a vacation to the Island of the Gods, especially if it is the first trip. A day trip to explore the rice paddies offers so much more than crisp, fresh air and stunning vistas to photograph.

Agriculture, and especially rice growing, is hugely important to the island’s culture and provides livelihoods and food for tens of thousands of families across the island. Nasi, aka rice, is the staple food base in Indonesia. Rice is life! And therefore it’s only appropriate that culture curious tourists take time to learn in detail about the rice growing cycle, the subak system, and visit as many of these rice terrace landscapes as possible during their trip.
