If you have been to Bali or anywhere in Java before, you will have come across the nation’s most famous wellness drink, Jamu.

For the uninitiated, let us get you up to speed. Jamu is life! This traditional medicinal remedy brings together immune-boosting roots, herbs, and spices to help you feel your best.

Whether you’re feeling a little stuffy after a long flight or battling with a serious flu, Jamu can be both a preventive and a cure.

This wellness drink is sold widely across Bali and Java and is made from turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, lime, anise, black pepper, and honey.

Some recipes also feature coconut water and pineapple juice to sweeten and reduce the concentration of the intense flavors.

In Bali, Jamu can be purchased from street vendors who use traditional family recipes and locally grown ingredients, and bottles can be as cheap as IDR 25,000.

There has also been a rise in Jamu health drink brands in Bali, which can be found at many of the island’s favorite tourist cafes, restaurants, and bars.

In 2023 Jamu was recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage, and in December, Bali will host the first-ever Jamu International Conference and Expo in Nusa Dua, and tourists are welcome to join the celebrations and connect to this incredible aspect of Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage.

Taking place at The Westin Resort in Nusa Dua from the 16th-18th of December, the Jamu International Conference and Expo will welcome to the stage an array of highly regarded speakers and wellness practices to discuss the role Jamu and Jamu culture has to play in the future of health and wellness locally and globally.

Wonderful Indonesia, Indonesia’s national tourism board, says, “Jamu represents a vibrant legacy of health, culture, and wellness that continues to inspire people around the world.”

“Join us at the Jamu Internaritoanl Conference and Expo 2024 to honor this ancient heritage and explore its significance in today’s global wellness landscape.”

The Jamu International Conference and Expo will be formally opened by the President of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto. Welcoming speeches will also be given by the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Cultural Affairs of the Indonesia Republic, the Minister of Health of the Indonesia Republic, and The Head of the Indonesian Food and Drug Authority.

Guest speakers will also include the Record Holder of the World Indonesia Record Museum for the first author of a book on Jamulogy.

While the expo is first and foremost a government and sector exhibition, tourists and health and wellness enthusiasts are welcome to attend what promises to be an insightful and inspiring couple of days in Nusa Dua.

The event will be held at The Westin Resort Nusa Dua; the Nusa Dua is Ba i’s biggest events and exhibitions resort and has hosted many a global conference, including the G20 Summit and the World Water Forum.

Nusa Dua is also home to Bali’s highest concentration of 5-star hotels and has long been the number one destination for luxury travel and wellness outside of Ubud.

All that is about to change in 2025 as The Sanur, a new special economic zone for medical and wellness tourism, will formally open to the public.
