Tourists Urged To Practice Safe Swimming At Bali’s Beaches This Winter

Bali’s beaches are amongst some of the most picturesque and famous in the world.

However, yet another tourist has lost their life after being swept out to sea by the strong undercurrent at Seminyak’s Double Six Beach.

Seminyak’s Double Six Beach is one of the most popular beach resorts in Bali.

Home to an incredible collection of resorts and luxury hotels, a world-famous nightlife scene, and exceptional food experiences, Seminyak really offers tourists everything they could ask for and more.

Tourists from all around the world love Double Six Beach because of its vast expanse of sand, great surf for beginner boarders, and family-friendly vibe.

While there are surf rescue and lifeguard posts dotted along the beach, there is no full-time lifeguard coverage along the whole of the Seminyak Beach area.

Tragically, a tourist from Tangerang in Banten, Indonesia, has died after being swept out to sea while swimming at Double Six Beach. 25-year-old Ramandika Noprio Pareri was reported missing by his friends on Monday afternoon.

The Head of the Denpasar Search and Rescue Office, I Nyoman Sidakarya, said that his team received a report from the Kuta Search and Rescue Office at around 7.55 pm.

According to the initial emergency call, the Pareri was last seen around 5 pm.

Sidakarya told reporters, “The victim was known to be swimming with his friends at Double Six Beach. However, suddenly the victim was swept away by the current and disappeared.”

Search and Rescue Teams were quickly deployed into the waters off Double Six Beach and a huge search mission was conducted.

A joint Search and Rescue team from Basarnas Bali, Balawista Kuta, and TNI-Polri Bali all joined the effort. A total of 15 rescue officers were deployed, two jet skis and a rubber speed boat.

Search and Rescue personnel also conducted searches along the shoreline with the help of detection tools like thermal drones and aqua eyes below the water’s surface.

The Marine Search and Rescue Unit (SRU) also moved from Kelan Beach towards the search area.

The teams continued their search into Tuesday evening, and tragically Pareri’s body was recovered from the water at 11.50 pm on Tuesday night.

Sidarkarya said “The victim was found dead. Currently, the victim’s body has been taken to the Prof Dr IGNG Ngoerah Central General Hospital using the Badung Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) ambulance.”

Sidarkarya has urged the public to exercise the utmost caution and attention when swimming in the ocean in Bali, especially during this high season.

Sidakarya concluded, “Hopefully a similar incident will not happen again and the victim’s family will be given fortitude in facing this ordeal.”

He added, “Tourists must also pay attention to weather conditions and waves before swimming.”

No matter how confident a swimmer, tourists must never enter the water when the red flags are in place.

Tourists are advised to only enter the water at Seminyak Beach close to where the lifeguard and surf rescue posts are based.

Although there is a flag system in place at some beaches in Bali, the majority of beaches, including the most popular swimming spots, do not have a flag or lifeguarding system in place.

If tourists are unsure whether they can enter the water or not at any given beach, it is always advisable to ask a local person on the beach in lieu of a lifeguarding station.

However, entering the water is always a risk tourists must mitigate for themselves.

Aside from a series of similar incidents on Double Six Beach this year, the next most dangerous beach in Bali is Kelingking Beach in Nusa Penida.

The Regent of Klungkung has previously implemented a swimming ban at the world-famous viewpoint after a sharp spike in the number of callouts to Search and Rescue.

There should be warnings about the massive fishing nets that lurk under the water and can get tangled in your feet or legs and cause you to possibly drown.

While surfing at Medewi, I was literally run over by a fishing boat. They turned right towards me and ran me over and never even yelled out to warn me. I still have the scar on my ass from it and I nearly got crushed.

And while surfing at Padang Padang, the red flag was not out and I paddle out as usual only to get stuck in a horrific current that nearly had me sucked towards the rocks on the Western shore and killed more than likely. By the time I (barely) made it back to the beach, the red flag was finally up and a jet ski was racing out to get others.

Bali is NOT a safe place. The ocean, the roads, your own home or hotel room. Nothing. You can get sick, hurt, or killed easily. Someone from the Netherlands just got decapitated on Jl. Ngurah Rai the other day from hitting a truck. I myself had an accident at night with a truck that had zero taillights and I hit it causing me and my friend to fly off and roll on the pavement. I am still recovering from the road rash almost 5 months later.

Worst mistake of my life ever coming to Bali.
